2011 MTV Movie Awards Criticized by Movie Fans

John Barnett
The MTV Movie Awards haven't exactly elicited the most positive reaction. Many are flinging criticism at the praise and spotlight award to "Twilight: Eclipse." While MTV's award ceremonies are rarely taken seriously, they still hold the power to anger countless film lovers. After viewing the MTV Movie Awards with the Memphis, Tennessee movie-social club, Midnight Run, I gathered some thoughts and choice quotes from key members. Midnight Run's reception to the awards ceremony was equal parts disappointment and outrage. Here's what some Midnight Runners had to say.

"I'm not mentioning that stupid vampire movie. You know what I will rant about though? The shameless attention paid to that talentless brat, Justin Bieber. How could they honor that dork and the train wreck that was 'Never Say Never?' I was disgusted, to say the least." -- Laura Rhen, 20, Memphis

"I fell asleep half-way through the ceremony. On purpose, might I add. I just couldn't take the ignorant commentary and lame jokes any longer. When they nominate some real movies and revamp their voting system, wake me up." -- Josh Glover, 21, Memphis

"It was worth wading through the poor content to see 'Kick-Ass' get some much needed attention. I was relieved to see MTV making more of an effort to appear legitimate. I was pretty disappointed when previous years had ceremonies drenched in advertisements and lobotomized testimonials." -- George Wilson, 22, Orange Mound

"I cringed at the sight of Justin Bieber's hair. He never should have changed it- I still can't get over that. It was nice to see his movie get an award. I would have liked to see some more love for the Bieb, but other than that - I can't complain. I actually find the 'Twilight' films to be fairly entertaining." -- Cordera Hester, 18, Memphis

"I was sick of 'Kick-Ass' back in 2010, so seeing it win awards gave me no pleasure. I wish MTV could broaden their horizons with the nominations. Seriously, the show will never be taken seriously if it only appeals to love-sick preteen girls and drunk college guys." Kevin Lee, 20, Memphis

"I was a little excited during Justin Bieber's appearance. Other than that, it was par for the course. Some disappoints like 'Harry Potter And The Deathly Hollows Part 1' getting snubbed -- and some victories like 'Easy A' receiving praise." -- Troy Wilkens, 23, Memphis

"Where's Kanye West? They should have brought him out to badmouth 'Twilight: Eclipse.' I rolled my eyes and groaned with each award they won. To all the hormonal teen girls that loved Twilight, I have this to say -- Get on with your lives and quit ruining a perfectly good awards show with your vote manufacturing." -- Maxwell Reeves, 19, Bartlett
