The 2011 MTV Movie Awards took place last night as most of America undoubtedly watched Game 3 of the NBA finals. Jason Sudeikis was pathetic as host, focusing much of his attention on inappropriate Arnold Schwarzenegger jokes, and "The Twilight Saga: Eclipse" sweeping the awards portion was predictable. In fact even I found the show to be in bad taste throughout, from Mila Kunis groping Justin Timberlake, to Mila Kunis groping Natalie Portman in "The Black Swan" clip. It's safe to say I am a much bigger fan of Mila Kunis now, but I watched the show with my grandmother, so needless to say she made it a little awkward. By the way, wasn't this show directed at kids aged 12-18? Two standout moments for me include a reaction shot from Emma Stone when Sudeikis exclaimed she played a Canadian hooker in "Easy A," as well as Reese Witherspoon's spot on diatribe against bad girls during her acceptance speech for the Generation Award honors. Musical performances were scarce, headlined mid-show by Lupe Fiasco & Trey Songz, and a Foo Fighters number. I felt like 90% of the show's budget went into set design. I expected a lot better show considering it was produced by Mark Burnett. Here are some comments by a variety of viewers.
"This show was terrible. I think the CMAs come on sometime soon, and at least they keep it decent. This was a slow year for the movies in general, and I don't think these awards were aimed at my age group. Since it was voting through cell phones that determined the winners, a bunch of 8-17 year old children were the judges. I believe "True Grit" and "The King's Speech" should have been nominated for best picture. This was the first time I watched these awards, and will probably be the last. Jim Carey had dogs humping on his shirt, and that set the tone." -- Helen Justice, 75 Pikeville KY Interviewed in person
"I think MTV cares much more about the VMAs, and they realize that the Oscars are the premiere movie awards. Any nominee associated with Twilight won before the ballots were printed, regardless of the quality of their performance. Justin Beiber won an award, and aside from the demographic that voted for these awards, no one cared he even put out a movie. I watch the VMAs and MTV Movie Awards every year, and any year with a Twilight film makes the show worse." -- Katherine Bryant, 34 Hazard KY Phone Interview
"I liked the show overall, but didn't care much for the awards part of it. Gary Busey in a hamster ball was definitely my favorite part, and it was refreshing to watch the host roast Beiber's girlfriend. I am really looking forward to "Super 8" the movie they advertised, but I think it had little kids starring in it too. I have watched the MTV Movie Awards a few times in the past, and will watch them again I'm sure. I hate watching acceptance speeches from Robert Pattinson & Kristen Stewart, so basically I could have done without that 50% of the show. I thought "The Fighter" should have at least been nominated." -- Mitch Justice, 24 Prestonsburg KY Phone Interview
"I loved "The Twilight Saga: Eclipse" and totally agree that they should have won Best Picture as well as Best Female & Male lead roles. I don't agree with Best Fight coming from Twilight. Even though I haven't seen the movie, the girl from "The Fighter" looked brutal, and I just think the "Kick-Ass" fight that was nominated would have fit in their scheme of award winners. As for Best Kiss, definitely would have liked to saw Taylor Lautner win that one. I watch MTV awards shows every year, and this year was no different." -- Jessica Little, 22 Prestonsburg KY Online chat
"I have watched the MTV movie awards before, and I tried to watch it this year. About halfway through "The Hangover" spoof I changed the channel & never got back to it. This morning I wasn't the least surprised to see "The Twilight Saga: Eclipse" won all the awards it was nominated for, and am glad I missed it. "The Social Network" should have definitely won Best picture, and Jesse Eisenberg should have won best male actor. I heard Reese Witherspoon's speech on the radio, and although I agree with her I think she is a little jealous. It was obviously a shot at Blake Lively, and frankly I think Blake Lively is hotter than Reese." -- Adam Hatfield, 24, WVa e-mail interview
"I never cared too much for pop culture events Unfortunately, can't make myself get interested. I haven't even saw "The Social Network" even though it won like a gazillion academy awards. About the only entertainment I watch nowadays is "Doctor Who" since you know, I'm a massive nerd." -- John Slone, 28, Pikeville KY via online chat
"I watched the movie awards last night, but I don't think any real movie stars were there. Lady Gaga should have performed or something, and I had never heard of the host. Didn't Chris Rock used to host these things? I did notice that Emma Watson was visibly upset that Kristen Stewart and the girl from "Easy A" won awards and she didn't. She'll always have this over those other 2; she has never been a love interest for Jesse Eisenberg in one of her movies. The host did hit a few good jokes, but it mostly missed the mark. I do think that "The Social Network" should have won best picture, or "The Town". It was really underrated. Robert Pattinson's presentation speech for Reese Witherspoon's generation award was hilarious. He is definitely the best mother lover in Hollywood" -- Pamela Hall, 58, Alderson WVA e-mail interview
