2011 MTV Video Music Awards: The Highlights and the Complete List of Winners

Victoria Leigh Miller

Sunday night's 2011 MTV Video Music Awards had everything you could ask for--- well, except a host. Still, who needs a host with the most when you have Lady Gaga dressed as a man?

Yes, the show's bizarre opener by Lady Gaga featured her dressed as her alter ego, a really unattractive, greaser dude named Jo Calderone. And she kept up the charade all night long with no costume changes, practically scaring the bejeezus out of Video Vanguard Award Winner Britney Spears and 80-something year old actress Cloris Leachman. Yeah, Jo Calderone is no Fonzie.

But Gaga's venture into manhood wasn't the show's only highlight. Musical performances included Jay Z and Kanye West, Beyonce (who proudly introduced us to her baby bump), Chris Brown, Pitbull, Adele and Lil Wayne.

Singer Jessie J had a strange house band gig, which means just as soon as you started to get into one of her songs it broke away to a commercial.

And then there were the tributes. Britney Spears got one (yes, she's been around for that long ) and the late Amy Winehouse was also remembered by her pals Russell Brand and Tony Bennett, with a tribute song by Bruno Mars.

While the VMA's host-less format seemed all over the place (as expected), it was pure MTV: scattered, lasery and rushed (watch the Spears "tribute" if you want proof.) This is the one awards show that never seems to go into overtime.
