2011 NBA Mock Draft: Shooting Guard Prospects

Barnes, Selby, Lee Highlight 2011 NBA Mock Draft Shooting Guards

Jackson Lewis
The 2011 NBA Mock Draft shooting guard prospects see two more freshmen atop of the rankings heading into the 2010-11 college basketball season. North Carolina freshman Harrison Barnes and Kansas's Josh Shelby head the list of prospects. Other notables heading into the college season include UCLA's Malcolm Lee and Baylor's LaceDarius Dunn.

#1 2011 NBA Mock Draft Shooting Guard Prospect -Harrison Barnes
6-8/215 lbs

North Carolina, Freshman

Although Harrison Barnes is listed on a number of mock drafts at the wing position due to his 6'8" height and 7-foot wingspan, he has demonstrated excellent form in his jump shot and shown the ability to knock down shots off of the dribble. Barnes is assessed as being a good attacker of the basket and is able to draw contact and get to the free throw line. Negatives on his game include a relatively low amount of experience playing in the 2 or 3 position after being an inside player for much of his prep career, but has developed rapidly. With the NBA draft focusing on potential in addition to current skill-sets, expect to see Barnes atop either the shooting guard or small forward prospects list for the 2011 NBA draft.

#2 2011 NBA Mock Draft Shooting Guard Prospect - Josh Selby
6-1/180 lbs.

Freshman Kansas

Josh Selby first made the front page of the sports section when he decommitted from the University of Tennessee. If he had a tad more size, you would see Selby listed over Barnes as the number 1 shooting guard prospect, and he may just get there before the end of the season. He is assessed as an outstanding slasher with NBA athleticism and leaping ability and has 3 point range on his outside shot. Negatives at this point for Selby include a propensity for selfish ball-play at the high school level, and not showing as much emphasis on his defensive game as the offensive side of the court.

#3 2011 NBA Mock Draft Shooting Guard Prospect - Malcolm Lee
6-5/190 lbs
UCLA, Junior

Malcolm Lee found himself thrust into a featured role on the UCLA squad last season after the team lost Jrue Holiday. Although he spent much of the season running the point, he has the size and skill-sets befitting that of a combination guard at the NBA level. He is assessed as having NBA quickness and athleticism with a strong defensive game, but has work to do on his shot selection and form to be successful at the next level.

#4 2011 NBA Mock Draft Shooting Guard Prospect - LaceDarius Dunn
6-4/200 lbs
Baylor, Sophomore

LaceDarius Dunn made news when he decided to skip the 2010 NBA draft and return for his senior season at Baylor. Last year he was an honorable mention All-American from Yahoo! Sports and averaged 19.6 ppg and 4.8 rpg during the Baylor run to the Elite Eight. He is considered a tad undersized for a true 2 guard, but has a strong frame but assessed as having a high basketball IQ. His athleticism is considered average to below average for NBA standards, but he has demonstrated an excellent touch with his outside shot

#5 2011 NBA Mock Draft Shooting Guard Prospect -Memphis Durrell Summers
6-5/186lbs

Michigan St., Sr

Memphis Durrell Summers returns to Michigan State for his 4th season and looks to have a breakout season. He finished the 2010 campaign averaging 11.3 ppg, 4.7 rpg, and shot just over 35% from 3point. Summers has the right body to play at the NBA level and has proven to be able to make the big play at the end of a game. Unfortunately, Summers showed a propensity to be inconsistent and to have an over-reliance on his jump shot at times. He has shown the ability to catch and shoot, but needs to do more to work on his slashing to the basket and ball handling to go higher in the 2011 NBA draft. His defensive skills are above average leveraging his height and overall length.
