2011 NCAA Tournament Preview: The Belmont Bruins

Belmont (30-4) Look for First Win in the Big Dance

Mike Spain
The Belmont Bruins (30-4) won the Atlantic Sun Conference Tournament and will be playing in the NCAA Tournament. Along the way Belmont set a conference record for most wins in a season. The Bruins currently have a twelve game win streak and have won 21 of their last 22 games. Belmont located in Nashville, Tennessee has been to the NCAA Tournament in 2006, 2007, and 2008 losing in the first round each time.

Why Belmont could be dangerous in the Tournament?

The Bruins could be dangerous because they are used to winning. Three of the team's four losses came to SEC foes. They lost to Tennessee twice and Vanderbilt. One of the losses to the Volunteers was by one point. The mid major school might be able to draw a seed high enough to gain a better match up in the big dance. Since Belmont is a mid major they could surprise a team if they are overlooked.

Reasons Belmont may not be successful in the Tournament

The Atlantic Sun conference only had four teams with winning records. The Bruins had a weak schedule and did not have an impressive non conference win. Belmont only has two seniors on their roster. The Bruins did not have a player who averaged more than 6 rebounds per game. The Bruins will meet better competition in the NCAA tournament. It is possible Belmont will not be seeded high enough to be favored in their match up in the tournament.

Belmont Leaders

Ian Clark leads the Bruins in scoring averaging 12.6 points per game. Mick Hedgepeth is second on the team averaging 10.6 points per game. Scott Saunders was third in scoring for the Bruins averaging 10 points per game.

Outlook

Belmont will probably make a quick exit from the Big Dance. However, the Bruins are capable of playing a close game. Belmont did not lose a game by more than nine points this season.

I'm still sick today, but I figure I can handle copying and pasting comments to get some returned.
