2011 NCAA Tournament Preview: The Oakland Golden Grizzlies

Can Oakland's Tough Non-Conference Schedule Translate to Cinderella Success?

Mike Spain
The Oakland Golden Grizzlies (25-9) won the Summit League Conference Tournament and will be playing in the NCAA Tournament. Oakland currently has an eight game win streak and has won 18 of their last 19 games. Oakland has been to the NCAA Tournament twice and is 1-2 in the Big Dance.

Why Oakland could be dangerous in the Tournament?

The Golden Grizzlies could be dangerous because they have played several teams from major conferences. Oakland has lost to West Virginia , Purdue, Wright State , Illinois , Michigan State , Michigan , Valparaiso , and Ohio State . Oakland upset Tennessee . The losses to Valparaiso and Michigan State were by one point. The Golden Grizzlies were 17-1 in conference play. The mid major school might be able to draw a seed high enough to gain a better match up in the big dance based on their tough non-conference schedule.

Reasons Oakland may not be successful in the Tournament

Yes Oakland upset Tennessee and played Michigan State close. The Golden Grizzlies also lost five games by ten or more points. Due to Oakland 's nine losses it is possible the team will get a very poor seed in the tournament.

Oakland Leaders

Keith Benson leads Oakland averaging 18 points per game. The 6'11" center also averages 10.2 rebounds per game and an incredible 3.8 blocks per games. Reggie Hamilton is second on the team averaging 17.4 points per game. Will Hudson has been chipping in 12.5 points per game and Travis Bader averages 10.5 points per game for the Golden Grizzlies.

Outlook

Oakland has a chance to be a Cinderella team. They have played several major conference schools. The Golden Grizzlies were able to upset Tennessee . More than likely Oakland will not get a favorable seed and will probably make a quick exit from the tournament.
