2011 SAG Awards: 'The King's Speech', Colin Firth, Natalie Portman, Betty White Get the Actor (Full List of WInners)

The 17th Annual Screen Actors Guild (SAG) Awards Celebrated the Best in Film and Television

Maxine Nelson
Sunday night on the TNT network saw another award show, The 2011 SAG Awards, of the season honoring the actors. The directors, producers, and writers have their own guild awards. It was time for the actors to honor their peers and give thanks to their union. Most of the winners were either repeats from the television categories or standard winners from the Emmys and Golden Globes. For films it was a repeat of the Golden Globes, minus Annette Bening and her film. However, one great big surprise win of the night came from a beloved veteran television actor who made history with hosting "Saturday Night Live" and having the year of her life in 2010.

The awards presentation started off with actors randomly chosen to tell their brief story on why they became an actor. Rico Rodriguez, the cute boy from the TV series "Modern Family" did a superb job articulating his tale to rousing applause. His show "Modern Family" was another surprise win in television for Outstanding Performance by an Ensemble in a Comedy Series. The other wonderful win came to Betty White from "Hot in Cleveland" beating out a number of big names such as Jane Lynch from "Glee", Edie Falco from "Nurse Jackie" and Tina Fey from "30 Rock." This was her first SAG Award of her career for Outstanding Performance by a Female Actor in a Comedy Series.

For films it was not too surprising with all of its winners. Natalie Portman won Outstanding Performance by a Female Actor in a Leading Role. Colin Firth won for Male Actor in a Leading Role. The Outstanding Performance by a Cast in a Motion Picture went to "The King's Speech." "The Fighter's" actors Melissa Leo and Christian Bale won in the supporting categories. Ernest Borgnine was honored with a Life Achievement Award. Current SAG President, Ken Howard, made an announcement that got me excited throughout the night. He stated the sister union, American Federation of Television and Radio Artists (AFTRA) are finally going to merge with SAG. I'll believe it when I see that, because they've been saying that for decades. I'm a member of AFTRA (honorary status right now). This was one way to get into SAG if the two unions merged. They never did until now, maybe. I'll take it coming from the SAG President on live television.

Finally, when some of the actors from "The Social Network" were up onstage to present clips of their film the microphone wasn't working for Justin Timberlake. When it became his turn to speak Justin caustically said "yeah thanks guys for finally fixing my mike." Like as if people are to jump when the great (I don't think so) Justin Timberlake walks into a room or stage. He was the only diva-esque actor from the whole awards presentation. Everyone else was thrilled to be there supporting their union, each of their fellow actors and happy to be working as an actor. Take that Timberlake. Here is a full list of all the winners and the nominees, including the ones not televised for stunt actors.

The King's Speech still sounds like a joke to me, a joke about what the awards panels like: snooty Brrrritish drama, a disease/disability of the week, with (subset of the previous) the triumph of the human spirit. I suspect I could not sit through it without giggling.

    Thanks for the update.
