2011 Summer Superhero Movie Preview

In recent times, superhero movies have become practically eponymous with summer movies. With the approach of the summer blockbuster movie season, one can expect a plethora of superhero movies, as if one cannot exist without the other. The summer of 2011 is no different. Six definitive superhero movies hit movie theaters in 2011. Whether it is "Thor," "X-Men: First Class," "The Green Lantern," "Captain America: The First Avenger," "Conan the Barbarian" or "Red Sonja," fans should be able to find a superhero movie that pleases them. Here's the rundown:

Thor - May 6, 2011

The superhero movie "Thor" hits theaters May 6^th, 2011. It stars Chris Hemsworth, Tom Hiddleston, Natalie Portman and Anthony Hopkins and is directed by Kenneth Branagh. Thor is blessed with the special powers of additional strength, stamina and long life (thanks to magical, Golden Apples). Thor (Chris Hemsworth) is also expected to appear in the 2012 movie "The Avengers."

X-Men: First Class - June 3, 2011

The umpteenth superhero movie in the X-Men series (following X-Men, X2, X-Men: The Last Stand and X-Men Origins: Wolverine) "X-Men: First Class" hits movie theaters June 3^rd, 2011. Kevin Bacon appears in this latest installment as Sebastian Shaw. The movie also stars Jennifer Lawrence as Raven, James McAvoy as Professor Charles Xavier and January Jones as Emma Frost.

The Green Lantern - June 17, 2011

The superhero movie starring Ryan Reynolds as "The Green Lantern" hits movie theaters June 17^th, 2011. The super power of the Green Lantern is a powerful ring, which is controlled by the imagination and will of the one who wears it. Martin Campbell will direct the latest movie version of "The Green Lantern."

Captain America: The First Avenger - July 22, 2011

In preparation for the 2012 movie, "The Avengers," "Captain America: The First Avenger" hits movie theaters July 22^nd, 2011. Chris Evans stars as Captain America who is blessed with extra strength, stamina, speed, agility and reflexes than the average human. Chris Evans is also slated to play Captain America in writer/director Josh Whedon's "The Avengers" (2012).

Conan the Barbarian - August 19, 2011

"Conan the Barbarian" hits movie theaters August 19^th, 2011. Jason Momoa is slated to play Conan, alongside other stars Ron Perlman (Corin), Rachel Nichols (Tamara) and Rose McGowan (Marique). Conan's special powers include strength, stamina and smarts.

Red Sonja - 2011 (TBD)

Adding to the inter-connectedness of the 2011 superhero movies is "Red Sonja." The sword-bearing she-devil, Red Sonja, will be played by Rose McGowan. Appropriately enough, Red Sonja first appeared in "Conan the Barbarian" in 1973 and the character who plays Red Sonja in 2011 is Rose McGowan, who first appears in the 2011 "Conan the Barbarian."
