Even Hurricane Irene could not slow down the start of the 2011 US Open, which is scheduled to take place on August, 29, 2011. Will Rafael Nadal be able to overcome his trouble from Wimbledon and return to his form? Who will step up on the women's side with Kim Clijsters out?
Here are a few predictions for the upcoming 2011 US Open.
Surprise Player on the Men's Side
Plenty of tennis enthusiasts are in love with Mardy Fish, the 8th ranked player in the world. After knocking out Rafael Nadal in an earlier Grand Slam and going toe to toe with Novak Djokovic, Fish seems like a sure shot, but he has a difficult course to reach the title round.
Instead, expect to see Andy Roddick erase his recent troubles on hard courts and make a serious run at a semifinals appearance.
Surprises Player on the Women's side
It is not a question of if someone is going to make an unexpected run at a US Open title; rather it is who will take this step?
There are several female players who have been making a case for themselves on the court, like Daniela Hantuchova or Victoria Azarenka. While they have shown potential, the real one to keep an eye on is Serena Williams.
After being saddled with the 28th seed, Williams will have something to prove and is going to be hungry to show the tennis world she can still perform with the best.
US Open Men's Champion
During the last 25 of 26 Grand Slam tournaments, the winner has been from a select group of three players, Nadal, Djokovic, and Roger Federer. You can expect two of these players to reach the semifinals of the tournament.
One of the other spots will be filled by Andy Murray who has a legitimate chance to reach the finals of his second Grand Slam this year. In the end, look for Murray to square off with Djokovic and the end result will be a US Open win for Djokovic.
US Open Women's Champion
There are several players who appear to have what it takes to make a run for the title and no one would be expected to see them with a legitimate shot at winning it. Williams may make a run to the semifinals, but will sputter out.
All eyes will be on Maria Sharapova and Vera Zvonareva who are on a collision course to meet in the semifinals. The eventual winner will be Sharapova , who will go on to claim a US Open title.
