2011 Writer's Guild Awards First-Person Account
Renaissance Hollywood Hotel in Los Angeles, California
The atmosphere was still excited, as many people were here to see who had won. That was probably the best feeling of the event. Not knowing what is going to happen can be a real thrill. As a writer and huge fan of the goals and desires of the nominated writers I sat and watched with excitement and awe.
I had my eye on the movie "Inception" as a contender. I was really fascinated with the way that the writer created the storyline. I was anxious to see if it would win. When it won the Writer's Guild Award for "Original Screenplay", I was incredibly happy. I thought that it would win for certain, but you never know with these award ceremonies.
My other favorite category is the category for "Best Adapted Screenplay". That went to the movie "The Social Network" this year. I was really happy that it won that award, although I wasn't really surprised. I read the book that it was adapted from called "The Accidental Billionaires", and thought that they did an excellent job with the screenplay.
The other awards were television movies, shows and such. I am not a fan of television writing. I think it is lacking in quality most of the time, so I wasn't keyed up about the winners or the losers. For those of you that are into it though, here are some surprise winners and losers.
The award for Animation went to "The Prisoner of Benda". Which was an episode of "Futurama". Ken Keeler of Comedy Central wrote it. I checked it out afterward, and it really is a hoot. I was surprised that the Simpson's didn't win however for their nomination of "Moe Letter Blues", which was written by Stephanie Gillis at Fox. Between the two, I would have to say that I see the winner as being superior writing. I just like the Simpsons better.
The event of the ceremony was a thrilling experience overall. I was happy to see the award show that is the end result of everything that writers go through to make these creations. It was exciting to see it all live at the Renaissance Hollywood Hotel where so many momentous events have occurred in Hollywood history.

Post a CommentHi JP!
I have friends in the industry. I never considered attending these events before I saw the calls for coverage. I love it though.
The coolest part of this, is that my brother is a writer in the independent movie business. I hope to cover one of his movies one day. ;)
How do you get to attend these types of awards? Interesting recount of the events.
