2012 BMW M1: Enthusiasts' Hands Want Its Steering Wheel

Kyle Busch
When the BMW 1-Series
made its debut at the Tokyo
Motor Show in 2007, it re-
presented the automaker's
intent on returning to a purer
driving experience.

Over the years, the 3-Series
has grown and become heavier
and its pure 'uncomplicated'
driving experience has slowly
slipped away.

The introduction of the

BMW 1-Series provided a car that was smaller, lighter, and somewhat less
complicated.

Recent spy photos suggest that the M1 will become a reality. A source
at BMW has informed Road & Track that, "there seems to be something
to the rumors." And if it happens, it will be within the North American
coupe's lifecycle, which puts it no later than 2013. Therefore, the M1
will most likely be available in Europe in 2011 and in North America
in 2012.

Regarding the car's name, 'M1,' it remains to be seen as it might be
doubtful if BWM would use the name from its legendary mid-engined
M1 icon of the late 70's.

The engine for the 1-Series M car could be a 2.0-liter four-cylinder
twin-turbo making about 275 hp or it might be a 3.0-liter in-line six-
cylinder turbo. The latter engine would be good for about 350 hp,
up about 50 hp over the current 135i. The transmission will be a
six-speed manual.

The M spec 1-Series will have stiffer suspension, larger brakes and
wheels. Additionally, the interior will be sportier than the regular
1-Series.

Regardless of the car's engine, a less complicated and purer BMW
driving experience will indeed be something to look forward to.
