2012: Doomsday (2008): A Movie Review

Jennifer Sapa
2012: Doomsday is a drama starring Dale Midkiff as Dr. Frank Richards, Cliff De Young as Lloyd, Ami Dolenz as Susan, and Danae Nason as Sarah. Lloyd has discovered the world is about to be subjected to an extreme climate change due to a gravitational pull by a black hole. But in reality the extreme climate change is an ancient prophecy that is about to be fulfilled. Warning: My movie review contains plot spoilers.

2012: Doomsday is extremely boring. I rented it because I thought it was going to be an action packed natural disaster destruction movie. I guess I should have paid more attention to the box cover because the movie is a Modern Christian retelling of the rapture which isn't necessarily bad if it wouldn't have been so boring. I actually like Christian movies. I really enjoyed the Left Behind series but 2012: Doomsday is just so boring and not at all comparable to other great Christian movies.

The movie flips around between three central groups. Dr. Frank Richards has found a golden crucifix that he must use to unlock a room in an ancient temple. His ex-wife accompanies him but dies along the way. Sarah is a missionary in Mexico who escorts a pregnant woman to the temple. She is accompanied by Alex, a photographer, but he dies along the way too. Susan is a paramedic in California who is drawn to the Mexico because of childhood dreams so she travels to Mexico with her mother. Her mother disappears along the way, assumed to be taken the Rapture. Lloyd drives to Mexico to find his daughter Sarah and picks up Susan along the way. So they all meet each other, reach the temple, and accomplish their goal of seeing the pregnant woman's baby born. The movie never technically says the baby is "Jesus" but it sure implies it. That is my main gripe with the plot. Jesus doesn't need to be reborn again. He has already been born once and that is enough. Wouldn't that make the baby the antichrist? I think the writer needs to read Revelations again.

This is a movie so of course they can take liberties with the Bible but in this instance, it isn't entertaining, just annoying and did I mention boring? I used the fast forward button a lot because I just couldn't get into the movie. The movie is a waste of time. If you want to watch and end of day's movie, go watch the Left Behind series. They are much more entertaining then this snooze fest. I give the movie 1 out of 5 stars.

Alicegirl, thanks for the heads up on this movie. I did an article on it called 2012 & from my research, I had wondered what the reviews would be like. Your great article confirmed my opinion. Thanks much. Thumbs up on this article. : - )

I wanted to go and watch a nice end of the world movie, 2012, only to realize that it was a continuation of the themes that have flooded out TV (but not only..) media in the past months. In a nutshell, 2012 teaches us:
    - the world is going to end on the 21st of December of 2012. They devote a few minutes to explain why. Zero time to explain how come that the Maya knew about it way before us. Not important, I guess
    - Obama is a good president that is trying to save the world. But with a twist! The African-American president, which is Obviously Obama since we are in 2009, dismisses the white aide to listen to the much more human and knowledgeable two African-American colleagues. This is just a beginning, and there is a big twist!
    - Since Obama is such a big character to be supported by a single actor, it is intelligently spread across several characters, namely:
-- obviously, the president, from now on O1, that unlike the one in "the day after tomorrow" has a big heart and loves hu

The government told us in the 1950s that you could survive a nuclear attack by ducking and covering under a desk. The history channel on you tube does a good layout of 2012. Too many things point to that date to think that nothing is going to happen. I would never imagine that this movie would match what the real historical and scientific facts point to. All you need to do is see what is happening around that time in 2012. The wealthy and powerful will be nowhere to be found hiding to try and ride out the storm or unknown that they know they are about to face.
