2012 Oscar Nominations Confirm Habitual Ryan Gosling Snub
The stellar year actor Ryan Gosling wrapped up in 2011, complete with starring roles in films across genres, seems to have gone unnoticed during the 2012 Oscar nominations. Moviegoers have good reason to scratch their heads in wonder why Gosling did not receive at least one Academy Award nomination for Best Actor. All of his recent films, including the romantic comedy "Crazy, Stupid, Love." and political thriller "The Ides of March," were well-received by critics and made a hefty profit at the box office.
If history is any indication, however, not even a popular action-packed film like "Drive" can put Gosling in the running for one of the highest honors Hollywood has to offer its talent -- even if this film had critics comparing him to legendary actor Clint Eastwood.
In fact, Gosling experienced a blatant snub by the Academy when the 2011 Oscar nominations were released and his costar Michelle Williams was the only "Blue Valentine" lead recognized for a performance in the film. Gosling's role in "Blue Valentine" was just as powerful as Williams's and likely what helped this movie receive wide praise from critics. One simple Oscar nomination for Best Actor is the least he could have received, if only to give both stars an equal chance at winning the gold.
Unfortunately, the actor was no stranger to being overlooked by the time the snub for "Blue Valentine" occurred. He was a critics' favorite in 2008, fresh off the heels of his comedy-drama "Lars and the Real Girl." It is hard to imagine how Gosling was nominated for nearly every major award in the entertainment industry, including a Golden Globe and a Screen Actors Guild Award, except for an Oscar for his lead role in this movie.
