2012: What's All the Hype About?

Everyone has heard the year 2012 rumors. How the world is going to end and things are going to change based on Mayan ancient civilizations as well as other prophecies. I love science and learning about the changes that are to come, however, what are the exact prophecies and what do scientists have to say about 2012? Are there really going to be any changes? Let's take a closer look at what is to come of our future and why 2012 is so popular.

The Mayan civilization isn't just an old colonization of Stone Age people, this civilization is noted for the only fully known developed written language, its art and architecture, and it's sophisticated mathematical and astronomical systems. Of all of these accomplishments, the Maya were keen astronomers and had mapped out the phases of celestial objects. The Mayan's appear to be the only pre-telescopic civilization to evidence knowledge of the solar system. Around 10,000 individual texts have been so far recovered, those that have been deciphered has to do with astronomy and the Mayan calendar. The Mayan's conception of time is shown through a Long Count calendar that can only be distinguished within 18980 days and is equivalent to 52 solar years which the cycle repeats once each lifetime. According to the Mayan Long Count calendar the end of the cycle is in 2012 and the beginning of the new cycle will occur on December 21, 2012 and is discussed to not necessarily mark the end of the world, but a new beginning or a time of re-birth and a New Age. Present day Mayan scientists have predicted December 23, 2012 to be the date of change. Scientists and astronomers have looked for signs of what new beginnings we're going to occur however, Indian defense research scientists and engineers say that they cannot speak until 2012 of what is going to happen. The Mayan calendar has also predicted geological events such as the July 26, 1992 time shift. The Mayan, Tibetan, African, Vedic, and Hebrew calendars are all in correspondence with the 2012 prediction.

Some civilizations see 2012 as a global cleansing. Casualties based on murders, suicides, and accidents have climbed. Not to mention the war in Iraq that has taken over 100,000 lives in the last three years and the numbers are climbing and there is no end of the war in sight.

Mathematicians plot December 21, 2012 as the date of "The Singularity." The date that everything we know will change drastically. The Singularity is a predicted future even that is believed to precede immense technological progress in an unprecedented brief time. Futurists give varying predictions as to the extent of this progress, the speed at which it occurs, and the exact cause and nature of the event itself. Some criticize the past events to support this theory, however if you think about it, in 1903 the "flying machine" or the first sustained flight with a powered, controlled aircraft was invented. Eleven years later in 1914, planes were being used in air to air combat in World War I. By 1929, aircraft evolved from being constructed of mostly wood and canvas to being constructed almost entirely of aluminum. Engine development proceeded apace, with engines moving from in-line water cooled gasoline engines to rotary air cooled engines, with a commensurate increase in propulsive power. Pushing all of this forward were prizes for distance and speed records. Within thirty years, Commercial Aviation took hold after World War II using mostly ex-military aircraft in the business of transporting people and goods. And in 1957 Sputnik 1 was launched into space by the Soviet Union. Now, by 2010 Bigelow Aerospace has plans to officially launch commercial space stations and space hotels, you can currently plan a trip to space for $200,000. My point is, we are evolving all kinds of technology very quickly.

The year 2012 has also been pinpointed to be the cliff of the Olduvai theory. The Olduvai theory is defined by the ratio of world energy production and population. Some think that this is unthinkable, preposterous, and dangerous, however, if you thing about it, the world is overpopulated and it is still growing. The more people, the more homes that need fed power. Electricity carriers can only hold so much power and to add more electric power systems can be costly, complex, voracious of fuel, polluting, and require operations and maintenance every day, every hour, ever second of the year. Another problem is that electricity is taken for granted. Just flip the switch and things happen. Electricity is the the "modern way of life," but the electric power systems themselves are demanding, dangerous, delicate, and vulnerable. We feed these plants with gas and oil to pump out and serve us with our electricity. But the Earth can only supply and produce so many minerals, once they are gone, they are gone. The Olduvai theory states that when an epidemic of permanent blackouts spreads worldwide, first there are waves of brownouts and temporary blackouts, and then finally the electric power networks themselves expire. If you haven't noticed, gas prices have been very high, this is because gas is made from oil and if oil is not readily available or there is a low supply, there is a greater need for it, causing only those who are willing to pay top dollar can drive their cars and heat their homes. Growing up you were told to save electricity. Not only because the more energy you use the higher the bill each month, it's because electricity is a luxury that is wearing thin.

2012 also signifies the next polar reversal where the North Pole will be changed into the South Pole. Scientifically this is explained by the fact that the Earth will start rotating in the opposite direction that can cause huge disasters of unknown proportions. Because the iron core of the earth is magnetic, when it moves to change direction, the upper mantles move as well causing the earth's plates to collide or spread apart. This will cause mountains to rise and collapse, land masses to break open or collide, sea levels to rise flooding the land as well as volcanic eruptions taking place. Ancient beliefs state that the poles, over time, may make the planet "top heavy" with the accumulation of ice and begin to tip. Some legends state that when this happens depending on which hemisphere of the planet you are on at that time, you will experience 3 days of darkness while this change takes place. According to prophetic writings, in order to survive a pole-shift, objects must be made purely out of natural materials like the pyramids and the Sphinx, natural materials that are in resonance with the Earth. Even then virtually everything on the planet will be blown away. Scientists do state that the effect of a magnetic reversal on humans is not known. Confusion might reign, and some theorize a complete 'reboot' of the human brain might occur. The loss of balance and performing simple coordinated movements would occur due to our neurological system being affected by the shift. More effects will include, migraines, electrical sensations in the limbs and spinal column, cramps in the muscular networks, intense dreams, and flu like symptoms. Scientists state that as the Earth changes our body will try to evolve and adapt to the changes causing us to go from two strand back to 12 strand DNA as well as having a greater immune system. If there are extreme changes in the atmosphere and light, our eyes will change to appear cat like to adjust to our surroundings.

Nostradamus is one of the world's most widely known and read prophets. In all of his predictions he predicted Nuclear War or a World War III sometime between 1999 AD and 2012 AD. This stupid Iraq war has been referenced to the next World War and not too long ago, North Korea began testing nuclear weapons. You go ahead and put two and two together and see what can happen when someone gets North Korea upset.

The Bible plays a huge part in revealing events. The Pole Shift is documents in the Bible as a 10 degree shift that forces Japan and the Philippines under water. Matthew: 24:36 states great tribulation will start between 2005 and 2012 AD.

These are just some of the predictions made and discovered for our future pinpointing 2012 as the end date, however, whether made by the Bible, our scientists, or previous ancient scientist and astronomers, we have to remember that we weren't the first beings ever to inhabit this large rock we call Earth. Our predecessors have lived and learned and made discoveries that reflect on our world now. Some documentations that we have deciphered from previous eras may be correct, it may be misinterpreted, or it may be false. But it was written and documented for a reason. Maybe to warn us about what happened to their civilizations or maybe to warn us of our civilization downfalls that were seen many centuries ago. We really can't say what is right and what is wrong because we never lived in that time period and never were able to view first hand what was discovered or endured, so we have to trust the brains deciphering the information found.

Whatever the truth may be or what may become of the Earth, 2012 isn't the end of the world, as far as we know it could be as soon as tomorrow or as far ahead as two hundred years from now or more, we have to realize that what we have right now is a luxury. The ability to use your vehicles and buy your food instead of growing and picking it yourself is a luxury. Lighting and heating your home with the flip of a switch and a monthly payment for those services, is a luxury. The human race performed and survived without these pleasures handed to us on a silver platter and if we keep taking these things for granted, I believe, that we are going to have to survive without them again.
