2013 Lexus GS 350: Generating Heat in the Mid-size Sport-luxury Class

Regardless of the automakers' almost invisible Lexus IS (I can't remember what it looks like) and the low volume LFA (the name does not conjure up much to me), Lexus is seeking the 'cool' factor. In other words, the company wants the 2013 GS 350 to stand out and actually generate some driver heat (cool can generate heat!).

At present, Lexus means quiet, luxurious and soft but not sporty, fun and engaging. In an effort to change drivers' perception, Lexus has redesigned the 2013 GS 350. It is a five passenger rear-wheel drive sport-luxury sedan.

Lexus has used an all new plateform for the car. It has a 2 inch wider track plus an aluminum intensive suspension that includes control arms up front and a multi-link set up in the back.

On the outside this Lexus has much crisper lines, an attention getting grille (the lines of the grille move in, form a point and then move outward). At the rear, the taillights take a page from the BMW look. Overall, this GS looks ready to run in a big way. The car's wheelbase measures 112.2 inches.

On the inside, technological features include the next generation Lexus multimedia with DVD audio and video capability, MP3 sound enhancement, 5.1 Surround Sound, and a high resolution eight-inch central control display located near the top of the dash. An optional, largest in the industry, 13.2 inch navigation screen is available. Additionally, the car has more leg, knee and headroom. The materials are rich and the design layout is top notch. Thus, the driver and passengers will not regret one minute they spend in this Lexus.

As for power, the GS has a smooth running 3.5-liter V6 putting out 306 hp and 277 ft. lb. of torque. The transmission is a six-speed automatic with paddle shifters. A knob on the center console allows the driver to influence the car's throttle response, transmission shift points, steering response, and heating, air conditioning and ventilation systems. The driver simply selects from Eco, Normal and Sport S settings. The car's 0-60 time is in 5.7 seconds and the top end is 147 mph.

The brakes are vented discs all around measuring 13.5 inches up front (including four-piston aluminum calipers) and 12.5 inches at the rear. The car's 60-0 braking is in 115 feet. The standard tire size measures 225 50 17 inch. Optional 18 and 19 inch tires are also available.

The car has four-wheel vented ABS brakes, electronic brake force distribution, emergency brake assist, Vehicle Dynamics Integrated Management system (VDIM) (stability and traction control).

There are a class leading 10 air bags in the Lexus GS 350 including a knee air bag for both the driver and front passenger. The rear seat occupants get seat mounted side air bags, and all four outer occupants are protected by side curtain air bags.

On the road this new Lexus shifts quickly and holds its gear in turns. Additionally, it is highly responsive to the driver's steering input and provides crisp and precise handling. The car's ride is stiffer than past Lexus offerings (although it still has a very smooth ride) and the engine has a more aggressive tone. It is a Lexus drive that is very close to its German competitors.

Regarding the car, Mark Templin, Lexus group vice president, was quoted in egmcartech.com saying, "Today, buyers in the mid-size luxury segment want a more engaging driving experience, styling that makes a statement, and a roomier interior package. With the all new GS, we're giving them what they asked for, and more."

The fuel rating for this Lexus is 20 city and 27 mpg on the highway.

The price of the 2013 Lexus GS will start at about $45,000. Being cool has its price, however, this vehicle's high level of driving enjoyment may well be worth it. Only you can decide!
