25 Killed in Karachi, Pakistan in Various Rain-Related Incidents

KARACHI -- Intermittent rains continued lashing the city into the weekend, while the death toll has reached 25 and the number of injured increased to 24 in various rain-related incidents such as electrocution and caved-in roofs besides the Karachi-Quetta traffic on the RCD Highway remain suspended due to heavy downpours.

25 people, including 7 women, died of electrocution and collapsing roofs. 3 peopel lost their lives and 3 others were wounded when the roof of a house collapsed in the Mauripur area. 2 died when a broken electric wire hit a passing rickshaw.

Among other rain-related incidents in the city, 15 people, including 2 women, died here. The dead and the injured were transfered to the hospitals.

Markets and the shopping centers here remained closed due to continued rain as the roads and the streets all across the city were submerged, and people in the offices remained stuck overnight until this morning. Traffics on roads were few and far between as several feet of water remained standing.

A meteorologist said that the city near the airport has received 124.2 mm of rains, North Karachi 130.8 mm and Faisal Base 98 mm.

Qamruzzaman Chaudhry of the Meteorology Department said that the existing monsoon system in Sindh would die down in next 12 to 18 hours.
