1. Adjust your thermostat so that you use less air conditioning in the summer or less electric heaters in the winter. Combine this one with using electric fans in summer.
2. Sign up to have a kill switch installed on your air conditioner or electric water heater. Something about giving up control to save a few bucks bugs me, but don't say I didn't include it in the list.
3. Use window fans to circulate air and cut back on your air conditioner use. I want to try this out this summer.
Unplug all appliances not being used. I have written about this before and basically think it's too much work for what you save.
4. Replace you incandescent light bulbs with compact fluorescent (CF) or LED bulbs. All my lights are CF now. I replaced them one by one as the old incandescent bulbs burned out.
5. Use energy star appliances. If you live in an apartment you're kind of stuck with what they give you.
6. Get a whole house fan.
7. Get an energy efficient air conditioner when you buy a new one.
8. Remember that kitchen and bathroom fans can pull all the cool air out of your house in about an hour.
9. Insulate the attic properly.
10. Install weather stripping.
11. Install interior or exterior storm windows. They can decrease heat loss through windows by 25-50%.
12. Use curtains or blinds to block out intense summer sun.
13. Insulate crawl spaces properly.
14. Turn off your screen saver and set your computer to go into sleep mode instead. I know those flying toasters are cool but get over it.
15. Don't set your refrigerator or freezer to be too cold. Refrigerators should be set to about 37°F. Freezers should be set to about 5°F. Knowing the temperature of your chill chest is also important for proper food storage.
16. The refrigerator is the largest consumer of electricity in your home. Consider changing to a more energy efficient model. Of course if you live in an apartment you're stuck with what they give you.
17. Defrost your freezer regularly.
18. Only run your dishwasher when you have a full load of dishes in there.
19. Wash and dry full loads of clothes.
20. Use outdoor lights that are have a timer or a photocell unit so that they shut down during the day.
21. Open your blinds and curtains during the day and use natural light rather than turning on a lamp.
22. Plant trees in locations that reduce heating and cooling costs. Similarly, get rid of trees that in bad places.
23. Like those blocking winter sun from getting to your home.
24. Turn off lights when you aren't in the room.
25.Do your best to provide proper ventilation to your house or apartment.
