3 Best Coffee Shops in Auburn, Alabama

Independent Coffee Shops that Can Do Some Things Starbucks Can't

J G Hodnette
In our modern world, when most people hear "coffee shop" they think Starbucks, but there are some small business coffee shops out there that are worth a look at. Auburn University has both a Starbucks and a Caribou Coffee on campus, so the competition for good coffee is fierce, but these three independent coffee shops excel under the competition.

1. Toomer's Coffee Co. - Located at 1100 South College Street, this independent coffee shop is referred to by coffee lovers as the best place in Auburn. They roast their own coffee beans to create quality coffee and espresso creations and additionally freshly bake treats like raspberry scones. They are unfortunately closed on Sundays, but this is about their only drawback. They play a variety of "cool feeling" music unlike many other coffee shops including a lot of jazz and some old classics along with the new hits. It has seating for about fifty and features free wi-fi. To sum up this place, it's a cool place to hang out and study with great atmosphere and even better coffee and baked treats. What more could you want?

2. Coffee Talk - New to Auburn, this shop at 369 South College Street takes a very innovative approach to the coffee shop experience. As you walk into the shop, you find yourself in a place more like a British tea shop. Instead of the typical cramped shop full of circular tables, Coffee Talk is filled with comfortable couches that patrons lounge at, chatting with their friends. The shop is a place great for people to meet and talk with one another with the coffee added almost as an afterthought. Unfortunately, this difference if noticeable when you get to the coffee itself. It is served in a styrofoam cup, not k cups, and it's not particularly flavorful, as they brew it without a professional coffee maker. Still, despite these coffee drawbacks, Coffee Talk, is a cool place to visit and study with your friends.

3. The Gnu's Room - 414 South Gay Street is taken up by an establishment known as The Gnu's Room. This charming shop is also a used bookstore featuring a number of great books to leaf through while you're relaxing. The coffee and espresso is very good and the hot chocolate even features designs in the whipped cream that will make you smile. On top of the interesting atmosphere are good drinks, the shop also features a number of events throughout the year. Philosophy club meetings, university faculty talks, and more. It's a cool place to study, hang out with friends, or write a paper. You couldn't get a place much more unique than The Gnu's Room.

These are just three of many great coffee shops in the Auburn area that you should know about if you feel like hanging out or drinking some great brewed coffee.
