3 Charitable Organizations that Help Overseas Troops Celebrate a Home Style Christmas

Help Boost the Spirits of Our Brave Troops Serving Overseas

Sophie Stillwell
Many Americans' thoughts turn to our troops overseas during the holiday season. We wish to show them our appreciation and help them have a fulfilling and home-like Christmas. Here are a few organizations you can become involved with or donate to to make sure our overseas troops get the best home style Christmas celebration possible.

Operation Christmas Tree

For many Americans, including our troops overseas, nothing says Christmas quite like a Christmas tree. It is synonymous with celebration, friends, and family. Operation Christmas Tree is an organization that sends 2 foot tall trees with lights and decorations to individual soldiers serving overseas. You can elect to donate to an overseas soldier you know or any available soldier on the organization list. You can make any donation amount you wish, but the suggested amount is $25 which covers the cost of a tree, decorations, lights, and shipping to overseas troops. Visit their website for more information.

Operation Give - Christmas Stockings

Probably the next most heart-warming symbol of a home style Christmas is a Christmas stocking. All of us, including our troops overseas, love to empty that stocking to see what kinds of goodies are enclosed inside. Through Operation Give, you can donate a fully stuffed Christmas stocking to be sent to a military member serving overseas, or you can donate any amount towards a pre-stuffed Christmas stocking. Operation Give also accepts donations to specifically aid with the shipping costs of sending our overseas troops these Christmas goodies. Visit their website to find out more about donating to their efforts to boost Christmas Spirit for our troops overseas.

Wrapped In Holiday Spirit - Soldier's Angels

www.soldiersangels.com

Soldier's Angels sends care packages to our overseas troops year round, but during the holiday season that send a special care package called "Wrapped In Holiday Spirit". A lot of us consider hand made or home made Christmas gifts to be especially meaningful, and this is how Soldier's Angels is different from other organizations that send Christmas care packages to our troops overseas - the central item in every "Wrapped in Holiday Spirit" care package is a home-made blanket. You can brighten the Christmas of the military serving overseas by making your own blankets to donate, or by donating any number of additional items to include in the care packages. A home-made blanket is a wonderful way to make this Christmas warm and personal for our troops serving overseas. If you are unable to make a blanket, you may also donate money for materials and shipping costs to make sure our troops get their wonderful Christmas gifts.

    Hello,

I want to let you know about another charitable website (Operation Holiday Stockings) that donated hand made Christmas stockings to the troops in Iraq and Afghanistan.
    Operationholidaystockings.com
has been around for a few years and they are gaining attention from the knitting community. People can donate hand made stockings, stocking stuffers, or they can donate money towards the shipping costs.

    Thanks,
    Joey

I'm very conflicted on this topic. I don't know if the military prioritizes mail from families over mail from organizations. I didn't want to contribute to the postal congestion that happens around Christmas and prevent anyone from receiving their "real" mail. But it also makes me sad to think of those who do not get anything. I just donated money to the USO b/c they do so many different things.
