3 Easy Apple Recipe Ideas: Apple Treats for Kids

Kay Whittenhauer
Get the kids to eat more apples with these really easy, inexpensive and delicious apple recipes.

Apple Dippers

You'll need:
Sliced apples
One or more of the following for dipping:
caramel dip
peanut butter
whipped cream

Little kids will need a grown-up's help for part of this. Have the grown-up peel, core and slice the apples. Place dips of your choice in small bowls. Kids can either dip the apple slices or use a dull knife to spread the topping on the apple slices.

Everyone loves apple dippers- especially little ones because they get to do part of it themselves and then eat it immediately. (And, they're just like McDonald's except better.!)

Apple, Jam, Whipped Cream Snacks

You'll need:
sliced apples
strawberry jam
canned whipped cream

Peel and core apples. Cut them into rings, if you can. If you can't core the apple without cutting it in half, then you'll have half-circles, which don't look as cool, but taste just as good. Spread a thin layer of strawberry jam on the apple ring and top with whipped cream

We used to make these all by ourselves in Four H when I was in fourth grade. They were one of our favorite snacks!

Apples on the Grill

You'll need:
apples
brown sugar
raisins
foil

Adult supervision is needed.

Wash and dry apples. Remove the core and a little bit of the apple around it so that you have an "apple bowl". Place a heaping spoonful of brown sugar and about ten raisins in the hollowed out apple. Place the apple on a foil square and seal tightly. Put the foil wrapped apples on the top rack of the grill, close the lid and wait about 20 minutes. The apples are done when they're soft.

For variations on the original apples on the grill recipe, try putting cinnamon and nutmeg, cinnamon and sugar, or walnuts in the apples. Apples can also be cooked over a campfire. If you have trouble hollowing out an apple, apple slices work just as well, but reduce the cooking time to about 10 minutes.

We used to make these on my son's Cub Scout camp-outs. The kids loved them! (And so did the adults!)

great ideas. I like teaching kids to play with their food using apples. I like cutting it across the equator (insteam of blossom to stem) to show the star the seeds make. I also like teaching children who are learning to use sharp knives to make apple swans...an old garnish that they can master.
