3 Easy Last-Minute Ideas for Teaching Children's Sunday School

If you're a children's Sunday school teacher or involved in children's ministry at your church, there will inevitably come a time that you will find yourself scrambling on a Saturday night for quick and simple lesson plan for the following morning. It happens to all children's ministry workers, especially if you work a busy full-time job, have a family or have some other unexpected event come up during the week that ends up taking more time than you had expected.

Of course it's always better to be prepared, but with these tips you'll find that it is completely possible to have a fun, rewarding and spiritually impacting class even with little preparation.

Use classic Bible stories

Chances are that there are a handful of Bible stories that you know backwards and forwards. For me personally, David & Goliath, Joseph, Jonah & the whale and Zaccheus are some of my favorites. Your Sunday school kids won't care that they've heard the story before, if you get creative with your story-telling. So feel free to use simple props, role-playing or even puppets when you re-tell one of these Sunday school classics.

You don't have to dig too far into the Bible story to get to the core lesson. Whether it's doing big things for God, the importance of obeying God or the consequences of disobedience, children will be able to easily grasp the Biblical truth that you're trying to get across to them.

Use the internet for easy resources

Once you have your Bible story picked out, go online and do a quick Google search for an age-appropriate activity/craft to go along with your lesson. Older Sunday school kids will love worksheets with word games and puzzles that go along with the Bible story. Younger Sunday school kids will probably benefit more from a fun coloring sheet or an easy Bible craft.

Remember to bookmark the Children's ministry resources websites that you come across during your search for easy access next time you need resources in a pinch.

Use guest speakers/teachers

If you're really short on time, this may be the perfect time to ask a fellow church member for some help. Ask someone who sings well to come in and lead your Sunday school kids in some fun children's songs. Or you can ask one of the teens who has been on a missions trip to talk to the kids about the missions trip and bring along some photos. You could even have one of the church mom's who loves to bake bring in the ingredients for easy cookies or cupcakes and have the kids help with the mixing, pouring and baking. Let the kids have a treat and share the rest with some of the elderly church members.
