3 Easy School Lunch Ideas

Kara Kelso
If your kids have to take lunch to school almost every day, you may be running out of ideas fast. While most kids don't mind eating their favorite food every day for long periods of time, it may be time for a change.

Below you'll find 3 very easy school lunch ideas to use in your kids lunch. These are ideas which are very easy to make tons of different versions of based on what your kid likes or what you keep on hand at home.

To make sure they'll actually eat it, try making the lunch together the night before. Not only will you be sure it's something they want, but you'll be spending some time together as well.

1. Sandwiches
Not just any sandwich, but one that you and your kids make together. You can add different types of lunch meat, cheese, tomato, or anything else to it. Getting them involved makes it extra special, and they are more likely to eat the entire sandwich if they made it themselves. You can get really creative here, and even try some new foods.

If you start running out of ideas for sandwiches, there are lots of cookbooks out there that are specifically for cold lunches and sandwiches. As with any recipe though, you'll probably want to come up with your own idea based on the ones in the book. Just don't forget to make it WITH your child!

2. Mini Pizzas
Start with an english muffin, and let them make their own pizza. This needs to be done the night before of course, so it has time to cook. It won't be warm for lunch, but it will still be yummy to them!

You can add any kind of toppings you want to these, based on what your kid likes. The best part about them being "mini" is they are personalized pizzas just for them. They can put absolutely any ingredient they want on top. You can make some suggestions like pepperoni, sausage, hamburger, mushrooms, olives, and anything else you normally put on a pizza.

3. Leftovers
In our home, there's usually not many leftovers. If there are, it's not much. Usually enough for just one person - or one little person at school! Get creative with your leftovers to make a nice cold lunch the next day. Things like roast, chicken, or other meats make for good sandwiches.

Another idea is keeping tortillas on hand to make "wraps" with leftovers. My son likes tacos so much that he'll eat just about anything if it's in a tortilla shell. You can also transform things like roast into sloppy joes or other things that you can stick in a bun. Just keep in mind it will be sitting for several hours before eaten, so it can't be something that needs to be eaten hot.

These are just a few ideas you can use for a nice, homemade meal even at lunch. Next time you are shopping keep these ideas in mind so you don't buy unhealthy processed food in a box for lunch!
