1. Research, research, research - Get to know the area where you are planning to base your business. While most areas have websites that you can access online to find statistics and laws governing businesses, it is still important to talk to real people. The best and most effective way to do this is by going to the local Chamber of Commerce. There you can speak with someone face to face and get to know the community and its needs. You can also find out if they offer small business grants or other programs to help you get things up and running. Do not be afraid to ask about similar businesses in the area, where they are located, how long have they been in business, and if they have been successful. This simple visit will not only educate you on your community, but also serve to inform you of the need for your product or service.
2. Communicate - Talk to your neighbor, the person in line in front of you at the bank, the mail carrier, anyone you come across in your daily routine. These are the people most likely to need your product or service, so why not go directly to the source. If one out of ten people you talk to are interested in your service or product, then that means 10 out of every hundred are as well, and so on - you do the math!
3. Advertise - Starting a business can be costly, but advertising does not have to be. Utilize the tools at hand, and do not be afraid to be creative. There are many free classified sites on the internet that you can use. The local public radio and television stations, as well as the local paper, are also inexpensive options for advertising. In addition, search out community bulletin boards. These are often located in the grocery store, post office and other local businesses. Posting a colorful, creative flyer at any one of these locations will help bring you business. Also, let us not forget good old word of mouth advertising. You can draw more business by this means than any other in most communities.
While there are many things to do to get your new business off the ground, these three steps will definitely give you a leg up on the competition and help you to succeed where others may have failed.
