3 Essential Tips for Online Information Business
Good Planning is the Key to Successful Information Business
In an informal gathering last week of like-minded web enthusiasts - many of whom engaged in other professions do little more than simple surfing and emailing - in which I was an attendee, there was unanimity in answers to both the questions.
Yes, people do want to do business online, and yes, the majority wants to 'share their knowledge' as the main focus of business. In other words, it's the information business that most are interested in, and look forward to start in coming days.
It's hardly surprising given the fact that the concept of Internet right from early days is based on sharing information. It's another matter that ecommerce too, and now socializing, have emerged to become 2 main pillars of Internet.
Talking of ecommerce, and considering that selling e-goods is one such, it is not difficult to see how information business has come to be one of the popular planks of Internet.
I'll even venture out to say that certain aspects of hard goods selling such as comparison buying is nothing else but a form of information business.
Indeed it is possible to imagine 'n' number of information business that has potential to succeed online. For example, few had any inkling of profitability of video sharing online until the phenomenal success of YouTube.
If so, what then are options for innumerable wannabe startups that want to make it big on Internet in information business? On the face of it, perhaps the only real challenge is one's imagination, or the lack of it.
The reality on the ground however is somewhat different. At a time when countless small businesses are debuting on the Internet everyday, the question that is more important is what does it take to start an information business online.
It's not uncommon to face questions such as, will my website succeed, what do I need anyway to start a website, or invariably the one, how will people know about my site!
Thus while ideas do not lack, many first-time website owners, especially those from old generation or belonging to that distinct class known as work-at-home moms or dads, find it difficult to start their dream venture.
Often the onus is squarely put on how good a website looks. This comes first in one's mind thanks to know-all ubiquitous website designers who make you believe so.
Nothing can be farther from truth. A website, even if it is not good-looking, can bring good returns if you play your dices well. Why, isn't Google's site, not extraordinary in looks and largely unchanged perhaps since the beginning, a good example?
According to my understanding, the 3 main points one ought to consider to start an information business online are as under:
What It Will Be About
When we say information business, it can be about anything as long as it meets the needs of a good number of people. On the flip side, it cannot be something, which you do not know sufficiently about.
In other words, dig out your niche ability. It may sound tricky but not difficult to decide your niche information business. People often feel that the subject of his or her career is the best category to start, but that may not be a good decision.
For example, you may be a HR person in your career, but if you want your information business about HR, you got to ask yourself the question: Are you passionate about it?
Suppose on the contrary you've been an out and out enthusiast about collecting stamps. You not only know a great deal about it, you are also a passionate collector of stamps.
If that is so, then perhaps philately is the ideal niche category for your information business. Want to delve deeper into your niche? It's a good idea.
So, instead of philately in general, you'd want to deal on that of US or the country you live in. And if philately is not your cup of tea, why not start how to cook pastries, or how to do garden decoration, or something you're comfortable with and have fairly good knowledge about.
Setting The Direction
If finding your niche online business is a must-do, so is to give it an achievable direction. To illustrate, let me take the example of 2 shoe stores in my locality opposite to one another. The bigger one keeps stocks of all that go as footwear, and it even has a latest arrival section right in the front to attract buyers.
However, since it has to keep many brands of footwear of different designs and sizes, it often happens that the store runs out of stock and cannot make sale to eager customers making them unhappy.
In sharp contrast, the smaller store across the store believes in no-frill selling and deals only in one brand, that too for adults. It seldom runs out of stock and since the brand it deals in has strong recall, the store caters to brisk selling all through the day and its customers too are a happy lot.
The moral of this real-life occurrence is that no matter how knowledgeable you are in your niche, it makes sense to focus on a particular ability than to try many things together.
Plan Your Thing
We now come to the real part. You've your niche, have decided the direction, and now you're ready to go. Well, the next action is design a website and get a host. There are many helps available who'll do that for you.
The real test begins when you start to fill in your website with contents. You now need as much relevant and targeted contents as you can manage. Write yourself or hire writers to do that for you. Do whatever, but do write.
Yes, keywords are important, and yes, search engine optimization is important as well. But more important is adding content continuously even if SEO takes a backseat.
This site (Associated Content) is a good example. Are its pages SEO-optimized? No. But it has enormous amount of contents written by people like me. And to lure more contents, it gives monetary rewards too.
If you're set to start, just remember the first 2 points. Focus on your niche, and don't go astray from the main direction of your online business. And while there, it is worth remembering a third point.
Which is to not forget the first two. Here's wishing you the very best.
