3 Fly Fishing Tips to Become a Better Fly Fisherman

Jeff Schuman
To become better at fly fishing you need to understand how to use three things correctly. You need a comfortable rod, a line to match it, and then you have to learn how to cast correctly.

Let's take a look at all three of these and the tips to help you become better at fly fishing

- Type of rod

1. A bamboo rod is the oldest type of fly fishing rod and is a tribute to the material still today. It is lightweight, flexible, and they have a nice slow action. This means they are ideal for those who practice a more refined method of fly fishing. These are the most expensive rods you can buy.

2. Graphite fly fishing rods are strong and durable. They can very in price and design.

3. Fiberglass fly fishing rods are strong, durable, and flexible, making it perfect as a material for fishing rods. The downside is they are heavier and can leave your arms more tired at the end of the day.

- Your Line

Choosing the proper fly fishing line is integral to your success. The fly has almost no weight, so it's the line that gives you the momentum to place your fly in the desired location.

Your fly casting skill will not progress with a mismatched rod and line. About 99 times in 100, the troubled fly caster has a line much too light to bring out the action of his rod. That is why it is important to know that on any given rod you should use the same size line for anything from small trout and bluegills up to the largest sea fish. Consult with a professional to match the correct line with your rod.

- Use the correct casting technique

If possible spend a day with an experienced caster. Much like a golf coach they can get you started the right way. In casting, It is important to get about 20 feet of line out front. You should always remember to cast a straight line. Avoid jerky movements even. Be relaxed. Casting is like anything else. You will get better with practice.

All good fly casters are smooth casters. Practice being smooth. When making your final forward cast do not change your timing and do not change your rod stopping point. The proper grip is important. Keeping your thumb on top of the rod helps you apply greater force in a short casting stroke
