Activity one: the Magic House. This is probably Kirkwood's premier attraction, at least for families. It is difficult to explain exactly what the Magic House is, because it is unique. It is a large building that contains all kinds of activities for children. There is no admission fee, but once inside, you'll find many, many activities feel to your kids. There are sand piles, water games, mock stores, science experiments, and many other activities. My favorite room is the photographic wall room; you stand in front of a wall while a light flashes, leaving an image of your silhouette on the wall. There are occasionally special events at the Magic House, such as visits by children's education characters (my two-year-old loved meeting Clifford). This unique attraction is definitely worth a visit if you have young children.
Activity two: the Farmer's Market. During the warm months of the year, there is a farmers market near the center of Kirkwood. This is a true farmer's market with plenty of fresh produce produce the nearby farms. In the fall, the market becomes Halloween themed, and you can buy pumpkins and other Halloween treats there. This is a great place to visit for a casual Saturday activity with your kids.
Activity three: the Old Train Station. Near the center of Kirkwood you'll find an old train station which is still operating. There is an old train engine on display, which your kids might enjoy it looking at. You might also consider taking an Amtrak train on a short trip into St. Louis, or perhaps over to Alton, Illinois. For people who commute through Kirkwood, the frequent traffic stoppages caused by the train can be a nuisance, but a visit to the train station can also be a fun activity for families.
Between the Magic House, the Farmer's market, and the train station, there are plenty of fun things to do with kids in Kirkwood, Missouri. If you plan to visit Kirkwood, consider visiting one of these attractions.
