One of the easiest and most common things that business people use to network is through the use of business cards. Get some business cards printed up if you haven't already, and distribute them to everyone you meet. You never know when someone will need your services. They may not need them today, next week, or even next year, but the fact that they have your business card will make you a candidate for a person when your services are needed. It's also good because an acquaintance of a person may need your services and you may be recommended by or referred to by them.
Get involved with your community. There are many ways that you can get involved with your community. The first one that comes to mind is church. Churches always need volunteers. People of various walks of life attended churches. You could also get involved with your children's schools or a program that helps poor people. Whenever you invest your time into other people karma has a way of paying you back 100 times over.
Not everyone is computer literate but joining special-interest clubs and forums over the Internet is an awesome way to meet people. This one is good for shy people and people who aren't good at face-to-face conversation. Lending your expertise and intelligence to others with questions about something you may know about is a great way to get known, and have people wanting to do things for you. It's also a good way to create a group of followers and establish a sense of leadership. People who regularly use discussion forums and special-interest clubs online know what I'm talking about. People will always disagree with your views, but that should not stop you from giving your knowledge and wisdom to others wherever applicable.
Networking and meeting people involves you giving. Whether it be a business card, a helping hand, or a reference, a person is more apt to paying attention to you when you are offering something. Selfish people leave bad lasting impressions on people regardless of their abilities to speak with others. If you expect to receive a lot you must be willing to give a lot. This doesn't necessarily mean that you have to give anything material. You can simply give your time or your knowledge. Time is money, so giving your time to others as well as your knowledge is very valuable.
