3 Great Children's Books About Trees
"I Speak for the Trees! for the Trees Have No Tongues!"- the Lorax by Dr. Seuss
"I speak for the trees! For the trees have no tongues!" is a famous line from the book The Lorax by Dr. Seuss also known as Theodore Geisel. This children's story is one of the greatest and most controversial books ever published. This book tells the tale of the Lorax and how he speaks for the trees as industry moves into that part of the forest. When they start chopping down the beautiful Truffula Trees the inhabitants lose their homes, food, and lives. The story makes points about environmental pollution, corporate greed and morality in a funny light tone that only Dr. Seuss can do. It makes us sad to see all the Truffula Tree's gone or dying. When a book can make you feel with passion then it is worth passing on to your children.
Shel Silverstein's book The Giving Tree is another great book for young children to grow with. This book is an amazing tale of friendship and sacrifice. A small boy befriends a tree, the tree gives and gives until finally the boy cuts down the tree to build a boat. When the boy comes back an old man the tree is just a stump. The tree tells the old man that it has nothing left to give it as it has given everything it already had to the boy/man. The man just needs a place to rest so at last the tree gives itself as a place for the old man to sit. This book teaches about giving until the end and is filled with the fabulous drawings by Shel Silverstein. The book is written in an easy to understand language with wonderful pacing. This book was so popular that it was translated into 30 different languages. This story is heartfelt and poignant.
A 2005 publication titled Oak Tree by Gordon Morrison is another great children's book that helps children learn about trees. A beginning reader book that is kid friendly and well written. This book goes through the life cycles of an Oak Tree with its creatures of the forest. A nest of robins, a place for squirrels and home to a hive of honey bees find how dependent upon the oak tree they are. Its a place for food, sleep and shelter. This book is written with a very nice style and young children will love it.
All of these books contain valuable information for our children to learn from. Each story is unique and opens up the doors of communication with our young. We can teach them how to better our forest, not use up our friends gift of giving and learn the life cycle of an Oak Tree all by reading these books. There are numerous books about trees, forests and plant life available to all by stopping at your local library. Check a book out today, You will be pleasantly surprised.
