Year 2008: April Fool's Day Joke on Flying Penguins

How would you like to see flying penguins? Maybe you could, if you believe what the BBC had reported in the year 2008, April the First.

In 2008, the BBC carried a report of flying penguins near the Antarctic. In the report, presenter Terry Jones offered the explanation that those penguins flew thousands of miles to the South America rainforests so that they could spend the winter basking in the tropical sun. Many of its listeners were taken in by that infamous gag and an attached video clip of the flying penguins became one of the most viewed videos.

In its follow-up explanation to its audience later, the BBC explained how the special effects of the flying penguins were created.

Year 1998: April Fool's Day Joke on Left-Handed Whopper

Calling all left-handed Burger King enthusiasts! How would you like to enjoy specially created left-handed Whopper, just for you? You possibly could enjoy one in 1998!

In 1998, a full-page advertisement was put out by Burger King in USA Today to introduce a newly created addition to their menu: "A Left-Handed Whopper". To enhance its authenticity, it was clearly explained that all the condiments were rotated 180 degrees to benefit the lefties and it contained the exactly the same ingredients as the original Whopper! As a marketing ploy, it was also emphasized that the new offering was specially designed for the 32 million lefties in the USA.

The traditional follow-up explanation revealed that the Left-Handed Whopper was a traditional April Fool's Day hoax. Despite the explanation, thousands of faithful customers had actually gone into restaurants to order the new burger. Interestingly enough, many others even ordered their own 'right-handed' version.

Year 1957: April Fool's Day Joke on The Swiss Spaghetti Harvest

Would you agree that people are more easily taken in by jokes propagated by reputable and famous brand-names? The following incidence appears to suggest so.

In 1957, the well-respected and famous BBC announced in one of its news shows that the Swiss farmers were enjoying a bumper spaghetti crop. That was due to a very mild winter and the elimination of the spaghetti weevils. Footage of Swiss peasants pulling strands of spaghetti down from trees accompanied the announcement. Many viewers believed the announcement and called the BBC for tips on how to grow their own spaghetti tree!

"Place a sprig of spaghetti in a tin of tomato sauce and hope for the best," came the diplomatic BBC reply.

What a joke!

I really love the Spaghetti joke. In fact, I may even look in one of my seed catalogs and see if they might have one I could order.
