3 Helpful Tips on Preventing Swine Flu in School

Clinton Daniel
What happens when someone says the word Swine Flu(H1N1)? Mass panic? Everyone runs in fear? Well, no longer will you have to cower under that rock. Here are a few helpful hints on H1N1 prevention in schools and everyday life.

One main concern of the nation is the spread of H1N1 in schools, but first we all have to realize something...Swine Flu isn't waiting in a dark alleyway, or the mysterious grey van with "free candy" spray painted on the side. It comes from people not washing their hands after using the bathroom, not covering their mouth when they cough or sneeze, and that sickly old man that lives down the street.

H1N1 is just a virus like the cold, and the major health concern is to the very young and elderly. Just like, what's that...the cold. A good habit to start is to keep a bottle of hand sanitizer with you. Now, I'm not saying go all O.C.D., but once you touch the door knob or use the pencil sharpener; just dab a little on your hands. This one thing alone will cut your chances for catching the disease in half.

And, if you see someone coughing without covering their mouth just lean over and politely ask them to, and if they don't...light them on fire. This will help keep you safe as well as get your point across. It's called manners, learn 'em. This will help you and others around you stay safe from the H1N1 virus, and your doing a piglet service(see what I did there?)

Another thing to keep in mind is, swine flu doesn't come from pigs, but I suppose the name came from poor manners. Which is what helped it cross the border, but the main way swine flu spreads is a large amount of people in a small area, such as schools. Schools are a breeding ground for disease, but good manners, hygiene, and a bottle of sanitizer on you will be the only defense you need.

In your travels throughout the school year be mindful of the people around you. If someone's sniffling in your class hand the a tissue, or is someone is coughing remind them of social etiquette. It's never a bad ideas to carry hand sanitizer, and use it every trip to the bathroom, or when you touch a shared object. Being safe, clean, and courteous is the number one prevention of any disease.
