3 Household Items to Make Your Home Smell Good

Sass Ashe
Air fresheners are a million dollar industry. Whether to cover up or neutralize bad smells or to infuse the home with artificial scent consumers are flocking to the checkout line in droves with candles, sprays and powders to make their homes smell different.

You don't have to spend all that money on artificial scents when you can have a fresh smelling, deodorized, and even pleasantly scented home for mere pennies using these 3 regular household items. Baking Soda, White Vinegar and Lemon Juice will clean, neutralize and freshen your whole house.

Smelly Garbage Disposal

Of course your garbage disposal can get a little smelly, think of all the different bacteria that you are putting in there. Removing the smell is easier than you think. The first step it to clean out the bacteria and rinse the disposal well.

To do this simply sprinkle in a few table spoons of baking soda, and then pour a large glass filled with a 50/50 mixture of white vinegar and water down the drain. Let this sit for a few minutes and rinse thoroughly with cold water.

Once the disposal is clean there shouldn't be any bed smell emanating from the drain at all, however if you want to make it smell even better you can run the disposal with a few wedges of lemon in it.

Cooking Smells

Many things that are cooked can leave a bad or overpowering smell throughout the house. Oil for frying, fish, and oven spills are all things that can cause an unpleasant smell. Neutralizing the odor is the key, not covering it up.

To neutralize cooking odors mix a few tablespoons of baking soda with a few teaspoons of lemon juice. A small saucer of this mixture in each room that has been permeated by the smell will soak up the bad odor without leaving a flowery overpowering cover up smell.

Pet Smells

Anyone who has a pet knows that of course pet urine has a terrible smell that is hard to remove, unfortunately cats and dogs have and create other smells as well, that can make a home smell not so fresh. Isn't it terrible that giving your dog a bath to make him smell better, also makes your house smell like wet dog?

For pet smells there are a few different odor sources you have to address.

* The pet itself probably has an animal musk, sprinkle your DRY pet with baking soda to absorb their scent and make them smell fresh.

* When bathing your pet include a white vinegar rinse to help alleviate the wet fur smell.

* Sprinkle baking soda on the pets bedding.

* For Urine stains and smells, use white vinegar to neutralize the odor and lift the stain.

General Household Scents

Keep an open container of baking soda in the refrigerator and freezer as well as in musty closets or pantry to absorb odors and mustiness.

White vinegar works wonders on toilet odors, and cleans at the same time.

Lemon Juice can be mixed with a little water and sprayed throughout the home as a general air freshener.

Sprinkle baking soda on carpets and let sit for half an hour before vacuuming.

These items are very inexpensive in comparison to what you could spend on different products for each odor in your home, and will leave your house smelling clean and fresh without the overpowering smells and chemicals that come from sprays and powders. Not only that but between these three items you can pretty much replace your entire house cleaning products arsenal, as they deodorize and sanitize as you clean with them.

I clean my house with baking soda, vinegar, and water, I never thought about what to do with the doggie smells. Thanks for the ideas!!

My husband has allergic reactions to artificial scents, and this article has lots of good ideas. Whenever I juice lemons, I keep the peels and run them in the garbage disposal. It takes a while for them to break down completely and so the sink smells nice and lemony for a while.

I'll have to try the vinegar rinse on our dog. The vet said to only bathe her once a week, but in between she smells like Fritos!
