Upcycled Country Headboard Makeover Ideas #1
If you have a country headboard that has no hope of being painted to contemporary you can make a modern slip cover for it. Minimal lines and clean surfaces are a popular look in modern furniture. Keep your slipcover simple and you will have a new look in no time.
If your headboard has carved details or rough surfaces you may want to wrap it in a piece of cotton batting or thin foam sheeting first. Slide your slipcover over the padding to create a whole new look.
Simply measure how tall, wide, and deep your headboard is. Sew a simple rectangle of fabric minus the bottom piece. Turn it inside out and slip over your existing headboard.

Paint is always a great idea when trying to makeover and recycle existing furniture. Go ahead and remove any embellishments you can from the headboard. You can also fill in small-carved details with a wood putty.
Sand the surface of your wood. Wipe away excess dust with a dry cloth. Next, paint on a coat of primer. Once the primer has dried you want to add a coat of paint. Some great modern colors for a contemporary headboard are a rich espresso brown, a fun metallic silver or bronze, or a high gloss black.

Finally, if sewing is not an option and you really want a whole new look that paint could never give why not attach a sheet of recycled galvanized metal to the whole front of your headboard. You can measure the size of your headboard and have the metal sheeting cut to size at your local home improvement store.
Be sure to have the edges sanded so they are not sharp. Screw into place in front of the headboard. You can also have the piece of metal sheeting cut large enough so that the edges can be wrapped around the sides of the headboard and no one will ever know what is underneath.
Another fun option is to have colored plexi-glass cut out in the same method. Predrill holes and screw into place on your headboard for a whole new look.
