3 Ideas to Upcycle T Shirts as Home Decor

Ann Siper
Upcycled home décor is all the rage in design. If you love to craft and decorate then try these ideas to create your own one of a kind recycled home décor on a budget. Old t shirts are something we all have. They come in every color, shape, and size. Plus the artwork and writing lends itself well to a variety of looks.

Upcycled T Shirt Home Décor Idea #1: Duvet Cover

Soft old t shirts are the perfect material to make an upcycled duvet cover out of. If your child or husband has a ton of t shirts lying around that they do not wear then this is perfect.

Lay each t shirt flat. Cut out a large square from each one. You should get one square from the front and back of the t shirt. Use your sewing machine to sew the squares together like a quilt. A sheet can be used as the back of the duvet cover.

Upcycled T Shirt Home Décor Idea #2: Slip Covers

Using the same idea of large squares cut from the t shorts you can also make a slip cover for a table or chair or even a couch. It works best to go ahead and make the pattern for slip cover. Next sew all your squares together to create on large piece of fabric.

Next use the large piece of fabric you have created to cut out the pattern. Sew as usual.

If sewing your own slip cover seems daunting then try out sewing a smaller pillow cover. This involves only straight line sewing and can be accomplished in a short time.

Another option kids might really enjoy is to make a pillow case for their bed. They can recycle all those old school trip t shirts and turn them into something useful in the home.

Upcycled T Shirt Home Décor Idea #3: Lamp Shades

Clean and crisp t shirts make great lampshade covers. You can take off the existing paper on the lampshade or simply cover it with the shirt.

Start by laying out a large piece of paper on a flat work surface. Trace your lampshade as you roll it along the paper to create the pattern.

Cut open your shirt up top at the shoulders and along one side. This will give you're a wide band of fabric. Cut out the fabric using your pattern. Be sure to cut ½ inch extra on all sides. Rough edges can be folded and ironed to look more professional.

Use hot glue to adhere the t shirt to the lampshade.

I make tons of pillows out of old t-shirts, especially cutting them into squares and then making patchwork pillow covers.
