3 Keys to Having a Fantastic Grand Canyon Helicopter Tour

Mike Beede
Helicopter tours are a popular way to enhance your Grand Canyon trip. These flights can allow you a view of the Canyon surfaces you cannot see any other way. You can fly over the Canyon, dip below the rim, and land safely at the bottom for a picnic lunch. Tours operate out of Las Vegas, Flagstaff, and Phoenix.

To assure that you have a safe and enjoyable flight over the Grand Canyon, there are a few things you should do:

  • Choose a good helicopter tour company. This is a very important point. Not all tour companies are the same. Choose one with a good safety record and a reputation for customer service. A reference from someone who has used the company is a good idea. If you do not have a reference, you can ask at your hotel or lodging. They have probably heard from guests which companies are most reliable.
  • Talk to your pilot. Double check any safety procedures with him, and have him point out the sights. Make sure you understand exactly where you are oriented in relationship to the Canyon.
  • Do your research beforehand. Know what to look for within the Grand Canyon, and tell him what you want to see. Have your pilot point out these sights to you.
  • The Grand Canyon spans an enormous area. It is measured at 277 river miles long, 18 miles across, and a mile deep. A trip to the bottom of the Canyon on foot or by mule takes 2 days to complete. Hikers can take 3 days to go from rim to rim. A trip by raft at the bottom on the Colorado River can take up to two weeks. Backcountry hikers can spend weeks in its depths. It takes time to get the know the splendors of the Grand Canyon, and it is no wonder that many visitors to the Grand Canyon area choose the helicopter flight as the easiest, most exciting way to view the Grand Canyon sights and the surrounding area.

Helicopter tours can run from 30 minutes to trips combined with boat and bus tours that run 7 hours. Only you can decide how much of your Grand Canyon vacation time you can allow for the tour. Prices can range from $135 for a 30 minute tour, to $300 for a 3 hour tour. You can also book helicopter tours that combine with overnight stays at the Grand Canyon National Park.
