3 Mai Tai Recipes: The Perfect Mai Tai, Mai Tai Zombie, Midori Mai Tai

It's Mai Tai Madness!

Darlene Michaud
A Mai Tai is a delicious cocktail that is made with rum. It's a favorite drink at any Chinese restaurant. But you can skip the big bar tab and just make a Mai Tai at home! Below are several variations for this fruity yet potentially potent concoction.

Note: 1 ounce equals 2 tablespoons, and 1/2 ounce equals 1 tablespoon. So, if you don't have a jigger to measure, just use measuring spoons!

The Perfect Mai Tai

1 ounce light rum
1/2 ounce dark rum
1/2 ounce 151 proof rum
1/2 ounce orange curacao (orange flavored liqueur)
1 teaspoon almond extract
1 tablespoon corn syrup
the juice of 1/2 lime
1/2 cup orange juice
slice of orange for garnish
maraschino cherry for garnish
ice cubes or cracked ice

Combine all the ingredients except the orange juice to a cocktail shaker. Add one or two ice cubes to the shaker and shake well. Fill a highball glass or a collins glass with ice. Pour the drink over the ice then fill the glass to the top with orange juice. Garnish the drink with a slice of orange and a maraschino cherry on a cocktail pick. Serve and enjoy!

Mai Tai Zombie

2 ounces Bacardi gold rum
2 ounces Bacardi orange rum
1 ounce Bacardi 151 rum
2 ounces triple sec
2 ounces orange curacao liqueur
3 ounces orange juice
1 splash grenadine syrup
1 dash of lime juice
1 splash soda water
slice of orange for garnish
maraschino cherry for garnish
ice cubes or cracked ice

Add ice to a hurricane glass until it is half filled with ice. Add all the liquid ingredients to the glass except the soda water. Stir well. Then top off with a splash of soda water and garnish with a slice of orange and a maraschino cherry on a cocktail pick. This is a very potent drink so be careful!

Midori Mai Tai

1 ounce Midori melon liqueur
1 ounce Bacardi Limon rum
1/2 ounce triple sec
2 ounce pineapple juice
1 ounce sweet and sour mix
ice cubes or cracked ice

Pour all the ingredients into a cocktail shaker with one or two ice cubes. Shake well. Pour into a highball glass that is almost filled with ice and serve. This is a sweet, much more fruity version of a Mai Tai.
