1. Sneakers
A pair of sneakers is necessary for gym classes if they require "dressing out" for participation in athletics. Athletic shoes are also a wonderfully supportive shoe to wear on days when a lot of walking will be required at school. If you want your sneakers to stay trendy, then use last year's model (providing your foot didn't grow) for sports and gym and keep your new sneakers clean for casual wear. Because of the heavier use sneakers receive, it is best to always purchase these new and allot most of your shoe budget to buying a quality pair. Make a figure such as $75.00 your maximum though, any shoe beyond that is either a specialty shoe or an overinflated price.
2. Slip-Ons
A good pair of closed toe slip-ons such as a loafer are also a good choice for the student. They are easy to slip the foot into on days when a clean pair of socks can't be found, and they are a valid footwear option for slacks, khakis, and even some dresses. Slip-on shoes can typically be found at resell shops in immaculate condition for a typical maximum price of 25% of retail (usually around $5.00) and can sometimes be found as cheap as $2 to $3.00 a pair. Check the bottom of the shoe for obvious wear as well as the sole for definite contouring.
3. Sandals
A nice pair of sandals is also a good choice for the back to school budget as sandals can be worn during several months of the school year as well as into summer. Avoid a delicate sandal for school wear as they offer little support and leave you feet susceptible to trampling. Try to find a fisherman's style sandal or a similarly designed sturdy pair. Sandals are extremely economical with options present at every mass merchandiser and at stores like Payless - a good pair can be obtained for $20.00 and less. Because of this, consider purchasing sandals completely new because of the skin to sole contact.
All three of these shoe types can round out the school wardrobe nicely and offer a great deal of value for little money. With careful shopping all of these shoes can be purchased with less than $100.00 of your clothing budget.
