Three Homemade Paste Recipes All Using Rice! Great Paste for Arts and Crafts!
How to Make Japanese Rice Paste: Japanese rice paste is a transparent library paste used to mend torn pages of old books. Cut a piece of white tissue paper the size and shape of the tear. Spread Japanese rice paste over the tissue and lay the tissue over the tear. The paste will be transparent when it dries and the tear will be mended. Japanese rice paste is also perfect for tissue paper collages and scrapbooks. Your kids will enjoy making this Japanese rice paste as much as they will enjoy using it for their paper craft projects. This recipe makes about 1+1/2 pints of Japanese rice paste.
Step 1: Gather the following ingredients to make Japanese rice paste: 3/4 cup rice flour (look in the diet food section of the grocery store), 2 tablespoons sugar, 3/4 cup cold water, 2 plus 1/2 cups boiling water, 1/2 teaspoon oil of cinnamon.
Step 2: Mix the rice flour , sugar and the cold water in a medium size pot and stir until smooth.
Step 3: Add the boiling water and bring to a boil over low heat stirring constantly. Heat and stir until the mixture thickens.
Step 4: Remove from heat and add the oil of cinnamon. Stir until well mixed.
Step 5: Store the Japanese rice paste in a tightly sealed jar. Do not refrigerate. This paste will keep for several months.
How to Make Instant Rice Paste: Instant rice paste is a thick paste that dries clear. It is good for all kinds of paper arts and crafts. It is also good to use as a base for finger paints. For paint, just add a drop of food color to the paste and you will have finger paint. Your kids will enjoy making instant rice paste as much as they will enjoy using it for their crafts. This recipe makes about 1/2 cup of instant rice paste.
Step 1: Gather the following ingredients to make instant rice paint: 1/4 cup dry instant rice, 1 cup cold water, 1/4 cup warm water, 1 teaspoon of an antiseptic such as Listerine or Bactine, an electric blender.
Step 2: Put the rice in a bowl and pour in 1/2 cup of cold water. Let the bowl set overnight.
Step 3: Pour the soaked rice into the blender and add the 1/4 cup of warm water. Blend on high for 5 minutes. Do not under mix or the paste will be lumpy.
Step 4: Pour the liquid rice mixture into a saucepan and add the remaining 1/2 cup of water. Heat the mixture on medium heat for 5 minutes, stirring constantly.
Step 5: Remove from the heat and let cool. Add the antiseptic to prevent spoilage. If you are making paint, you can also add the food color.
Step 6: Store the instant rice paste in a glass jar. It will keep for several weeks. Do not refrigerate.
How to Make Liquid Rice Paste: Liquid rice paste is a great paste for making paper collages. You can use a basting brush to spread the paste on the paper. Your kids will enjoy making liquid rice paste as much as they will enjoy using it for their crafts. The rice does have to soak overnight, so plan ahead when making this liquid rice paste. This recipe makes about 1/2 cup of liquid rice paste.
Step 1: Gather the following ingredients to make liquid rice paste: 2 tablespoons instant rice, 3/4 cup warm water, a few drops of antiseptic like Listerine or Bactine, a blender.
Step 2: Put the rice and the warm water in a bowl and let it sit overnight.
Step 3: Put the soaked rice in the blender and blend on high speed for 5 minutes or until liquid.
Step 4: Add a few drops of Listerine or Bactine to prevent spoilage.
Step 5: Store in a covered glass jar. Do not refrigerate. This liquid rice paste will only last for several days, so do not make too much.
