3 of Portland, Oregon's Great Family Hotels/Motels for the Traveler

CJMathis
Families traveling to and around the area of Portland, Oregon can rest assured that there are some great hotels in this area that are family oriented. I have lived in Portland my entire adult life and I still visit some of these hotels for great family stays that include a day of swimming in the 24-hour swimming pool, and other things I don't have at home.

Radisson, Portland Airport - 6233 NE 78th Court (503) 251-2000 http://radisson.com

The Radisson is located in an ideal spot for the family flying into the city of Portland. The Radisson sits just 2.5 miles from the Portland International Airport and is also minutes from shopping, downtown and other great activities. Spacious rooms await those visitors who are seeking a nice night in a great bed. The Radisson at the Airport provides a fitness center, gift shop, business center, unfortunately there is no swimming pool for the kids but light rail is close for quick travel to those areas of Portland that the kids will love. This is a great family hotel for those who fly into Portland late at night and wish to stay close to the airport for their return travel plans.

La Quinta Inn & Suites - with 3 locations in the Portland area families can stay close to their final destination, 4319 NW Yeon Ave (Downtown), 431 NE Multnomah (NE Portland) and 11207 NE Holman St. (Hwy 30 towards the Oregon Coast).

Each of the La Quinta Inn & Suites locations has the amenities that families love. My family usually rents a couple rooms for those birthday parties that need a swimming pool. With the La Quinta Inn & Suites 24-hour pool the entire group has fun. Always close to a great restaurant breakfast, lunch and dinner is just a walk away. Rooms are spacious and comfortable, with King, Queen (1 or 2) beds and enough room for those who need roll-a-way beds or want floor space for those sleeping bags. Mom and dad can sit in the hot tub while the family children swim. Fitness centers, business centers and fresh coffee and cookies each day. Breakfast is great at the La Quinta not those stale muffins like other places, but fresh waffles, boiled eggs, and cereal. Even the kids will love the La Quinta when you visit Portland. Locations allow for quick easy family travel by light rail, bus or taxi if a rental car is not on the agenda.

My final pick is the:

Governor Hotel - 614 SW 11th Ave, (503) 224-3400 www.governorhotel.com

The Governor Hotel is filled with history, sitting directly in the downtown area of the great City of Portland; visitors enjoy the sights and sounds of the city. Filled with historic furnishings and moldings, the Governor Hotel is great for families with children. Centrally located so that museums, theatres, shopping, light rail to any outside area of Portland such as the Oregon Zoo are quick and easy to navigate. Although the Governor Hotel looks like it should cost a fortune the room rates range from $159.00 - $275.00 a night. Enjoy Starbucks coffee and pastry at the onsite location of Starbucks. One great thing with the Governor Hotel is the romantic and family packages; each one includes something different for the weekend. Starbucks Bed and Breakfast is great for that family couple that wish a romantic over night in downtown Portland enjoy the nightlife and wake up to a Dark Cherry Mocha and Pastries in your room; these specials run from $169.00 to $179.00. Jakes Grill is one of Portland's most famous seafood and steak houses and with some of the Governor Hotels packages for families the breakfast vouchers to Jakes is included. One of our favorite activities is a night at the Governor Hotel and a day in Powell's Book Store just down the street. Sit in Powell's read your book from cover to cover, have a snack and coffee or tea at the Powell's Bookstore Café/Coffee Shop and just let the stress of every day life roll away. Kids love it when Mom and Dad jump the light rail and take them up to Washington Park and the Oregon Zoo. A day in the beautiful rose garden and walking through the famous Oregon Zoo is great fun, take a picnic lunch ordered at the hotel and enjoy the day of sunshine and fun.
