Don't Give Out Your Number or Address
Many online daters will insist that you give them your phone number so that they can call and speak to you on the phone. Sometimes they will request your phone number as early as the very first communication online! Don't do it. There are plenty of ways for a stranger to find out all of your personal information, including your address, by looking up your cell phone or landline number. It goes without saying that you should never give your physical address to someone who you just met online.
Instead, if your new interest insists on giving you his or her phone number, call him or her from a restricted line after a few conversations. Don't give out your phone number until after meeting the person and feeling confident that he or she is somewhat trustworthy. You can also get an 800 number(only a couple of bucks a month) to give out to new people you meet online. This way, if they turn out to be annoying or a problem you can block them on your 800 number settings. Also, they won't have access to any personal information about you other than that random 800 number ; you can just disappear!
Meet in a Public Place
Some Internet daters will be bold enough to suggest that you come meet them at their house, or ask if they can come over. That's a big no no. Don't ever go to meet someone you met online in a secluded or private place. Always make plans to meet in a public place with plenty of folks nearby, such as a restaurant or well known bar. This way, if the person turns out to be a little "off," to say it lightly, you can always get away from the situation without fearing repercussions.
Don't Put Your Eggs in One Basket So Soon
Sometimes, you'll meet someone online who seems like the perfect catch. You meet and everything clicks. You get along and even finish each others' sentences. Regardless of how beautiful everything seems, it's not always a good idea to put all of your eggs in that one basket and assume that your search is over. Some daters will go so far as to shut down their online identity and profile after meeting a guy or girl who they believe is "the one."
Take at least three to six months to date a person and make a decision on whether you want to be exclusive. In the meanwhile, continue to date and explore your options. You could end up missing out on a great choice in a mate because you were so entirely fixated on one person who later turns out to be a dud. Online dating is very similar to regular dating in many ways. You have to take every precaution possible to protect yourself and prevent a bad situation.
