3 Productivity Tips for Professionals Who Work from Home

Holly Matheson
For those who work at home under their own management and leisure, you may have noticed that your productivity levels can often vary from one week to the next. As much as working at home seems like it would be a leisurely career, the truth is that making the switch between a traditional career and working at home by means of your freelance talents can be an overwhelming adjustment.

In a traditional career setting, you may have become adjusted to having someone of a higher position to inform you of how to do your job, what needs to be done, and so on and so forth. However, for the freelancer who works for themselves, the leisure of being your own management can also have its pitfalls. When there is no one around to keep you in line and push you to achieve goals, you may have found that it can be difficult to keep both your motivation and productivity levels high. While there are the added benefits of not having to commute to and from work, give your time to customers and other co-workers or maintain a set schedule, all of this freedom can quickly lead to a disaster attempt at a freelance career if you are unable to manage your turnover rates and productivity. With these tips, you should soon find that your motivation and inspiration have returned full force.

Get Some Privacy

If you're working at home, chances are you have children, a spouse, or other distractions that are frequently surrounding you. While it is a convenience to have the added free time to spend with your family, it is important that while you are working that you have a secluded place that you can work in privacy without frequent distractions. If you have an extra bedroom or another room that has a door that can be closed, utilize this space as your office area. Although your current and potential clients likely know that you work from your home, loud televisions and screaming children do not exactly portray a professional impression of you. Not only can these distractions keep you from having a successful turnover rate and meeting deadlines, but they can ultimately cause you to lose out on potential work.

Don't Get Carried Away With Your New-Found Freedom

As nice as it feels initially to know that you are no longer required to abide by the schedule of a higher authority, you are in for quite the unwanted surprise if you take advantage of this freedom. Realistically, although you are not required to work a 9 to 5 shift Monday-Friday, you should push yourself to maintain a regular schedule. Set a weekly goal for yourself, whether it is to work __ hours or to complete __ projects. Once you have set this goal, stick to it. Remember that when you work at home you do not have someone available to ensure that your work is completed so you must be able to keep yourself motivated, in turn ensuring that you are able to increase and maintain your levels of productivity.

Give Yourself A Break

Just as working too little can obstruct your productivity, spending too much time in front of your computer will, too. Be sure that you are taking time away from your work for lunch breaks or to clear your mind. This time away will help you to escape for a few moments and re-evaluate what needs to be done, ensuring that you are refreshed and ready to work when you've returned to your desk. Spending too much time in the depths of your work can hurt your productivity in the long run, as you will likely become burnt out on your work, causing the quality of your work to suffer.

Ultimately, in order for you to achieve your freelancing goals, it requires a lot of work and self-motivation on your part. Your job may be different from traditional jobs, but this is perhaps the most important reason to treat it as though it is a professional work place. Essentially you are responsible for the success of your work from home career, will you make the most of it?
