When you purchased your computer, you might have started with a certain storage capacity. As time goes by and as you add more and more files and programs, you quickly feel the need to upgrade to a bigger hard drive. Therefore, the first use to an external hard drive is to add more storage space to your computer. This is especially so if your computer's hard drive bays are full, or if you have a laptop which has only one hard drive bay.
A second reason for using an external hard drive is as a shared storage media. You can usually set permissions and share-ability on the external hard drive. You can save pictures, music files, and video files on it. Not only do you release much storage space on your local hard drive, files on the external hard drive are shareable with everyone that is on the same network.
A third reason for using an external hard drive is to store backup copies of important documents. You can scan wills, deeds, contracts, insurance documentation, lease information, bank account and credit information, and store them on your external hard drive. You could also take pictures of all your valuables, and store them in your external hard drive for future reference. You can then store this external hard drive in a safe location such as a fire-proof cabinet, or a safety deposit locker. This is sure to save you tons of headaches if something were to happen to your valuables.
These are 3 possible uses for an external hard drive. They're versatile, and are available in different sizes for you to choose from. If you need to save several hundred files, you could get yourself a 500 GB external hard drive, and larger ones are available. If you only have a few files to save, then a 10 GB hard drive would probably be sufficient. The important thing is that you can choose what size you would need since you know how you are going to use it. You can also go in for more than one external hard drive. That makes them much more compelling.
