3 Roots Coffee House: The Best Little Coffee Shop in Tempe

Good Coffee in the Shadow of ASU Campus

Mike McQuillian
Spending your day in Tempe, Arizona? Need some coffee to get you through that morning/afternoon/evening sluggishness? You can't go wrong with 3 Roots Coffee House. Located on 10th St. and Mill, across the street from ASU and just south of downtown Mill, this coffee shop is one of Arizona's best spots for caffeine, comfort, and charm.

Coffee

Tempe, being a college town, has no shortage of coffee shops. Good coffee, they key part of any coffee establishment, can only be found in a few. 3 Roots offers great java in spades. Not only are their specialty drinks, like the delicious caramel star, top-notch, but they deliver when it comes to your standard cup of morning joe. Some coffee shops in Tempe try to make up for poor ingredients and inexperienced servers by going overboard. Their coffee is too strong, or they use too much syrup, making their drinks sickly-sweet. 3 Roots, on the other hand, puts time and effort into making their drinks taste just right.

Food

The guys and gals at 3 Roots know that too many menu options leads to a lack of quality food. Their menu is small, but everything on it is good. This coffee shop covers breakfast, lunch, and dinner, and they even have some options for the vegans in your family. Their chocolate chip banana bread is the best in Tempe, hands down.

Vibe

3 Roots is a great coffee shop to spend time in. The baristas are always friendly, deftly-avoiding the assembly line feel of the chain coffee shops. This Tempe mainstay is furnished with tables both inside and outside, with room for studying or having a meeting. The wireless internet connection is free, a definite plus for today's connected public. Couches and soft chairs abound in another room, so it's a good place to relax, as well. Paintings by local artists line the walls, and there's just enough hippie vibe to the place that it's fun, not overbearing.

I have spent many a day at 3 Roots, writing, reading, or just plain vegging out. It's the best coffee shop in Tempe for eating, drinking, and rejoicing in the shadow of the ASU campus.
