Within a family, in order to build a mutual good future together, both of you and your spouse should contribute some efforts into developing good spending habits and saving money. If your husband has bad spending habits, this may bother you a lot and you may wonder if there are some ways to make your husband to change his spending habits. Yes, you need to take some steps to make him change:

Step 1 - You should analyze his spending habits.

Before you make your husband sit down to discuss about how to improve his spending habits, you'd better do some preparation work. You may take two whole months to collect the bills paid by his credit cards or debit cards and figure out he has spent these money.

After collecting all the necessary information, you should take time to analyze these data and you may figure out some unnecessary payment among these bills. For example, your husband may use the ATM machines too frequently to take out small amounts of money and each time he has to pay extra processing fee to the bank. In this case, you can think about asking your husband to do his withdrawal less often but within a reasonable bigger amount each time instead of paying a lot of extra fees to the bank.

Step 2 - After you have any overview of your husband's spending habits, you can have a talk with your spouse.

You can list out the unnecessary spending that he has done and explain to him that it's important to get his contribution into the family saving as to build a healthy family finances. Tell him that you can't finish all the work by yourself and you do need his help and support.

If your husband thinks some of spending might look unnecessary in your eyes, but quite necessary for him, you should listen to his explanation and try to figure out a way to save part of this spending, even if your husband can't avoid this spending completely.

Step 3 - Be a good example for your husband.

When two people live together, their personal habits can influence each other day by day unconsciously. When you do something to save money, you should show that in front of your husband and tell him that he may consider trying the same way to reduce his spending.

You husband may not be interested in learning from your good spending habits at the beginning, However, after some months, you can do a calculation and tell your husband how much you have saved for the family thanks to your good spending habits. Sooner or later, your husband will start to try your spending habits.
