3 Things to Know About Your CLUE Report

Evan Nash
You may see the word and think that this has something to do with the butler in the kitchen with a carving knife, but this has nothing to do with the popular board game. Your CLUE report is a vital piece of information that helps insurance companies keep information straight to avoid fraud and get a better impression of ones insurance history. The question for you is how much time you should spend worrying about this report or if you should at all.

Here are three things you should know about your CLUE Report:

  1. This is information that is shared by many insurance companies to track your history with claims against your policy. Your insurance information is shared so that companies can avoid paying people twice for the same claim. This is an essential tool to guard against fraud and also helps with forming your policy.
  2. Your information on this report is restricted only to your relation to insurance claims and the like. Your credit, or perhaps criminal, record will not be included in this report to protect you from unnecessary lapses in security. Don't worry about what people know about you, just realize that auto-related functions will be on this report. Traffic violations, claims filed, accidents you were involved in will all be included.
  3. The information included in the CLUE report will stay there until 7 years have passed. This may seem like a long time period to penalize someone, but it is the agreed upon standard for reporting to CLUE. Keep good records of your infractions so you can notify someone down the road if your information is incorrectly reported.
It is rare that such a competitive field will have companies that conspire together to protect each other, but this is the fact of the matter with insurance. Fraud has always been a concern and coming up with a justified rating scale is another, the CLUE report helps both of these things. You must understand that regardless of where you go your CLUE report will follow you from one insurance company to another.

What you must do to protect yourself is request a copy of your CLUE report to verify that it is accurate and correct. The proper procedure to do this is to make a written request to C.L.U.E. Inc. Consumer Disclosure Center, P.O. Box 105295, Atlanta, Georgia 30348-5295, or call toll free 1-866-312-8076. Any information on the report that is unclear or suspect should be reported to an attorney or insurance company.
