3 Tips for Freshman and New Students at a University

Your first experience at a university can be experienced in many different ways. Some freshmen panic and get homesick, while others have too much fun and end up in the hospital. Regardless of who you are or where you are from, adjusting to a university can be an uncomfortable experience. A few things to remember will make the experience easier for you.

1. Don't forget home
Many students are overwhelmed by the college experience trying to buy books, meet friends, or find apartments. As busy as you may be, do not forget to call home to speak to your parents. They probably provided opportunities for you which lead to your acceptance into a university. If you do not keep in touch, your parents might bug you to call more often or feel lonely.

2. Wait to buy books
Textbooks can be required by a class, but sometimes they are optional. Check with an instructor or another student to find out which books you must buy. Try to find a cheaper price than the book store through online book exchanges or auction websites. Books are often much cheaper used.

3. Get off to a good start
Many students are introduced to a new environment without parents or adult supervision. A student is also responsible for his or her own work and failures. Too often, students blow off classes or minor assignments and lose points. Some even completely neglect their schoolwork and get a bad GPA, sinking them into an academic hole. Get your work done on time and do not save work a night before the due date. Try to set yourself an attainable goal, such as finishing the first semester with a 3.0 GPA.

If you keep on the right track, the chance of success is much greater. Avoid making bad decisions such as academic dishonesty (cheating) or jeopardizing your health. Use these tips which work from first-hand college experience.
