In a faltering job market many people try to stay under the boss' radar for fear of losing their jobs. However, it may be smarter to manage your boss-especially a difficult one.

In today's economy, it is paramount to be noticed for the right reasons. Instead of just being good enough, use the following tips to manage your boss and save your career.

1. Understanding

Managing your boss requires patience, understanding, and empathy. In fact, many believe that the key to a successful career relies on being able to understand your boss.

Instead of becoming frustrated with a difficult boss, observe their preferences and adapt. Maybe your boss hates using email. Maybe he or she hates numbers and is all about creativity. Making small changes like these can surely help you in your career.

2. Balancing Act

Balance out your boss' weaknesses with your own strengths. The is impertinent when managing your boss and maintaining your career.

Maybe your boss is bad with numbers or simply disorganized. Rather than complaining about your difficult boss, be pro-active. Take charge. Make some calculations, follow up on orders your boss missed, be mindful of deadlines, ect. In using your strengths you will gain your boss' trust and boost your career.

3. Ask for more responsibility.

While making sure not to overstep your boundaries, make yourself known to company leaders. This may be a bit tricky because your immediate boss controls your work and you do not want to get on their bad side. You also do not want to take on more than you can handle.

A great way to stand out is by taking in a project you are confident you can succeed in. You can also take some initiative by organizing small company functions or helping others with if they have overwhelming tasks.

Ultimately, you must gain respect and assert your value. In a shaky job market, only you can make yourself valuable and ensure your career.
