3 Tips to Planning and Preparing Meals Ahead of Time to Aid in Weight Loss

Cheryl Williams
One of the biggest ways we tend to sabotage ourselves when trying to lose weight is lack of planning. Lack of planning results in unhealthy eating. We are more prone to eat what is convenient, which often comes in the way of fast food, chips, cookies or nameless other sugar, fat filled treats.

The good news is that you can start planning and preparing your meals ahead of time and it isn't hard to do. Here are some tips to get you started:

Plan your meals a week in advance. When you plan your meals your mind accepts that this is what you are going to be eating. You are less likely to be tempted by unhealthy alternatives.

Grocery shop using the list you made for the week. Keep your eyes open for any healthy foods that can be prepared ahead of time and frozen. Frozen vegetables and fruits can easily be incorporated into your weekly meal planning.

Pre-cook foods on the weekend...or on your day off from work. This isn't difficult to do. Buy some boneless, skinless chicken breasts. Cook and freeze them individually. When you are ready to eat, all you will need to do is warm them up. You can also make homemade soups and sauces and freeze them. Chop up some veggies so that they are ready to include in your recipes throughout the week. Make a batch of whole grain pasta or rice. You can freeze these as well in individual serving bags so that all you will need to do is heat and serve.

There have been so many times I came home from work hungry, having no idea what I would eat for dinner. Most of the time I would end up at a fast food joint or I would pop a frozen pizza in the oven. It wasn't so much because that was what I wanted to eat. It was simply because I was tired and it was quick and convenient. When I began pre-planning and preparing my food ahead of time, eliminating as many steps as possible along the way...I began to automatically eat healthier. As a result, I began to lose weight.

Planning and preparing your food ahead of time does not have to be difficult. All it takes is a bit of thought and time. The results will be beneficial to both your health and your weight. Another great benefit is that you are doing most of the hard work of meal preparation on your day off, so that you do not have so much to do when you are tired after working all day. Give it a try and see the difference it will make.
