You can buy a domain name in several different ways. The first obvious way would be to buy it from a domain registrar. Buying a domain name from a domain registrar is probably the easiest and many times the cheapest way to register a domain name. Another way you can buy a domain name is through a domain auction. The only time you should go to a domain auction, is when you are looking to buy a domain name, either that you want but is already registered or to find a profitable domain name that you think you may be able to sell for a nice profit. There are several domain auction sites and you can find them searching on a search engine. You could also buy domain names at popular auction sites that sell other things, which would be okay to go to regularly because you can find them their cheaper than other domain auctions.
Something smart people do that have been flipping domain names is keep themselves anonymous. People who sell domain names are looking to get as much money is possible. If they know that you are a seasoned investor or an experienced buyer/seller, they will probably set the price way higher. So keep yourself as anonymous as possible so that you can get the best price possible. Now it's not to say that a seller will definitely give you a lower price in any situation, but a domain name is only worth as much as someone is willing to pay for it.
The process of selling a domain name can be gone about and several different ways. The best way is using the domain auctions. With domain name auctions you can put them up for sale, where buyers are constantly searching, which will give you a better chance of selling it. The only problem with most auctions is that it costs you money to post them and the ones that don't charge you to post them, are harder to sell on because the domain names won't be easy to find for buyers. For example, there is a domain auction site that allows you to post and park your domain names for free, but in order for your domain to really be seen by buyers, you have to pay $39 to get your domain name listed in the featured listings. Others will charge you about the same amount for each domain name, but you have to pay that for initially listing them. Popular auctions that sell other items besides domain names are the cheapest auctions you could list your domain names at, but it does not have as much potential to sell for as much profit, compared to actual domain auctions.
Buying and selling domain names can be a very lucrative market if you know you're doing. The best thing as with any online market, is to do your research before you dive in.
