3 Top 10 Teams Lost in Week 10

And 2 Others Have a Close Call

There was lots of drama yesterday in college football. Let's start with the Iowa game at noon. We saw yesterday why the voters haven't been giving Iowa the credit a 9-0 Big Ten team would seem to deserve. The voters and most of America thought Iowa was very luck to still be undefeated. And a mediocre Northwestern team finally held on to a 4th quarter lead against them. Iowa was unable to muster another late 4th quarter comeback and they will slip back into the pack with Ohio State and Penn State. They can still win out and earn a Rose Bowl berth but Ohio is looking like a much better team now. They had a solid performance at Penn State yesterday.

Stanford is a sneaky dangerous team. With Harbaugh coaching them now, the Cardinal have a solid football program now. They won't be contending for any national titles soon but they are and will remain competitive in the Pac 10. They showed this by winning a shootout against Oregon 51-42 last night.

Now that Oregon is longer the nation's top 1-loss team, who is? Georgia Tech? They needed to convert a 4th and 1 in overtime to stay alive in that game, which they eventually won 30-27. The Yellow Jackets opponent was a mediocre Wake Forest. Wake is now 4-6 but has lost 5 of those games by a total of 13 points. The Demon Deacons could easily be 8-2 or 9-1 and in control of the Atlantic division of the ACC.

Cincinnati nearly lost after having a 20 point lead against Connecticut. But they likely will move up to #4 in the polls thanks to the upset of Iowa. The other top 10 team to lose was LSU, who had a 15-10 lead over Alabama in the 3rd quarter but couldn't stop Ingram and Julio Jones in the second half.

In the AP Top 25, Florida, Texas, and Alabama are still in the top 3 spots. TCU jumped up to #4, followed by Cincinnati and Boise State. At #7, king of the one-loss teams is Georgia Tech, way ahead of #8 Pittsburgh. Ohio State and LSU round out the top 10. Later today we'll see how the BCS computers and my computer rank the teams.

It's hard to call a 4-6 team anything better than mediocre regardless of how close they're played everyone, but the fact that they have led late in the game against some undoubtedly good teams (mainly GT and Miami) show that they are still a solid club.

So wait.. let me get this straight. Tech won against a "Mediocre" team. And then in the next sentence that same "mediocre" team has barely missed a 8-2, 9-1 season to be in control of the ACC? Make up your mind.
