3 Unique Baby Shower Ideas

Erin Rivera
In the past most women only received a baby shower for their first baby or if they went on to have a baby of a different gender and the showers were always given to them by a close friend, family member or co-worker. These days expectant mothers are not only having baby showers for each child they have but many parents actually throw the showers themselves before or even after the birth of of their child as a way of celebrating the birth of their child. Here are 3 unique baby shower themes that will be a big hit not only for the new parents but for guests as well.

The first theme is great for parents who may already have all the necessities they need but who still want to celebrate their new baby. The idea is to have a book party. Here instead of the typical baby shower gifts most new parents receive, guests are instead asked to bring their favorite childhood book and write a small message on the inside of the book to the new baby or to the parents. Not only is this great for parents who may have kids close in age but it is also a great idea for parents-to-be who are waiting till birth to find out the gender of their baby. Typically the expectant parents will open the books and the guest who brought the book will give an explanation as to why the book means a lot to them. A great idea for decorations for this type of baby shower is to try to find nursery rhyme decorations. If you cannot find decorations with a nursery rhyme theme you can always opt for soft colors such as light greens or yellows. The menu can vary and many bakeries will be able to design a cake with the picture of an open book on it or even with the above mentioned nursery rhyme pictures.

The next theme for unique baby showers is to have a luau party or beach party. For gifts, guests can opt for the typical baby shower gift ideas such as diapers, clothes or baby supplies or for parents who already have everything they need, guests can bring something for the baby with a beach theme or luau theme such as brightly colored Hawaiian floral shirt for the baby if it is a boy or a Hawaiian doll if it is a girl. Those who are throwing the party can have a lot of fun with the menu for this type of party. Barbecued pull pork served on Hawaiian sweet rolls is an inexpensive and tasty main course. For appetizers fresh fruit kabobs and Macadamia nuts can be set out. As for drinks, fruit punch and cocktails are always a hit especially when they are served in "coconut" cups. Decorations can be made at home or can usually be found at most party supply stores as well as many different websites online. For extra fun guests can be encouraged to show up in their best beach or luau attire.

Our last idea involves throwing a "dessert" party. At a dessert party the host or hostess makes (or buys!) a few of their favorite desserts and guests are asked to bring one of their favorites. In the end there is a huge line of desserts for everyone to sample and enjoy (and take home!). Since the main theme for this type of shower is "sweets," decorations can include images on them such as cupcakes or ice cream sundaes. If these cannot be found floral decorations or solid colored decorations can be used as well. For gifts for this type of baby shower, one fun idea includes a "diaper cake" to go along with the theme. These can be made at home or bought online. Not only are these "diaper cakes" cute but they are very useful to the new or expectant parents as well. The menu for this type of party is very simple. The host or hostess will want to ensure their guests have plenty of different drinks to choose from such as coffee, tea, soft drinks, lemonade or fruit punch. As for food since the theme is desserts they will want to include their favorites plus of course a baby shower cake for the mom to be. Some hosts enjoy adding a few extra menu items to cut into the sweetness a bit such as fresh fruit slices or even small appetizers such as cheese and crackers.
